Duke of York

I used to call here regularly but frankly the meal wasn't that great. None of my party of four liked the chips. They were frozen cheap ones. The meal over all wasn't that great for any of us but surely they could cook real chips. It's in a great location and the beer is fine

Fabulous little gem in the harbour with unreal views we had room 8 very modern and clean. Pillows and bedding were top class. Cosy pub with views looking out to the sea. Staff were very friendly and Guinness was top notch. Food was really good as well

Fabulous family room with incredible sea views. The room was large and comfortable. It was spotless and nicely decorated. We had an evening meal and breakfast and couldn’t fault a thing! The staff were helpful and friendly and the location is fabulous. I would highly recommend it.

Great nights stay, we had a lovely pint in the bar before checking into our room. The room had everything required, iron hairdryer, large bathroom. Bed was lovely and comfy. They have live music of an evening which you could hear in our room however after a day of eating, drinking and walking around we fell asleep in minutes so do not let this put you off, it's busy pub there is going to be noise. The pressure in the shower needs to be looked at but it certainty wouldn't put us off staying again. The staff we spoke to were all helpful and friendly. Special mention to the lady who took our order this morning for the tips on how to get home during storm Bert, the coastal route was the right advice, we were home in no time.

We had two very different experiences here. Location: hotel is in a great spot! Thursday - Friday: hotel appears to be run by kids! Upon arrival, hotel is nice we were taken to our room and all seems nice. We ate dinner which was good quality. Room itself is a little on the small side but still adequate and a lovely view of the harbour. We were on the ground floor which we didn’t mind although the room is quite hot and no means of keeping window open without risk of security concerns. The next morning, we waited 10 minutes before our server came to us. His attitude was awful. We had to ask for him to top up the orange juice and he was far from attentive! Still the food quality was again very nice! As we were staying 2 nights, we would have expected a little more from the room refresh..no towels were replaced and our bath mat had been left on the floor where we left it which makes me think the bathroom wasn’t even looked at! Furthermore, the toilet roll was left next to empty! I had to go to reception (which is the busy bar) and ask for toilet roll. This was embarrassing..they said they would top it up if we were going out…3 hours later I had to go back to the bar and this time to collect the toilet rolls myself !!! Friday - Saturday. The next morning, the staff were older and much more customer facing type of attitude! They were lovely, attentive and we were served breakfast quickly. Again the quality was great! Summary. Great hotel. In great location, food was great. A quick refresh of staff and the is hotel becomes better.

The Duke of York Whitby is a lovely place to stay and eat! It is in a perfect location to all the landmark sights right in the heart of the historic town of Whitby. You feel the history all around you. It is just below Whitby Abbey by 199 steps up and close to the Captain Cook Museum. Our delightful room on the waterfront was perfect! After soaking in their lovely bath and listening to seaside sounds and seagulls, it made me feel quite at home away from home. The Duke of York is run by Roger, a charming soul full of fascinating stories and his lovely son Andrew who is the manager. The pub is where you have your breakfast and is open for lunch and dinner too. Their wonderful staff will make sure all your needs and breakfast wants are met. It also has an outdoor beer garden right on the waterfront where you can enjoy a cold drink and relax as you watch the sun go down with the Captain Cook statue in silhouette on the hillside across the water. Definitely take a fun and easy walk to view the town from the opposite angle and see the Captain Cook monument up close. You can see how well placed the Duke of York is from this lookout. The hotel is located down a long pedestrian friendly shopping street made up of original cobblestones, so keep that in mind if you are packing heavy and taking a rolling suitcase. We highly recommend seeing Whitby on a UK journey and staying at The Duke of York!
