I would have given this a 4 star rating had I not had the experience I did at check out. So I’ll start with the positive. The hosteria itself is a charming building.. the facilities are basic but warm and comfortable and the location is perfect for anyone here to ski or hike on Cerro Catedral. The bar/dining area is welcoming and nicely decorated. The food in the evenings is ok but expensive, you can get as good a meal in the village for half the price. Breakfast is perfectly adequate, nothing more. My only complaint with this place came at check out when we had an issue with payment. I confirmed our booking in Dec 2022. The quote was in dollars, as all hotels are in Argentina, normally however, and in EVERY OTHER hotel I have ever stayed in in Argentina the bill is then settled in Pesos. The email from 8 months before did say to settle in cash but I hadn’t read the email in 8 months and had forgotten what it said. I explained this and admitted it was an honest mistake and tried to scrabble together as much cash as I had - which was over half the bill - I then made every attempt to settle the rest however I could - with a credit card or in pesos. I was dealing with Richard who whilst clearly annoyed was trying to help us sort it. However he called his brother Christian who asked to speak to me on the phone and proceeded to hurl a torrent of abuse at me down the phone, accusing me of trying to cheat him out of money, I was the only person to ever behave like this and I was going to cost him money. I offered him pesos cash but he told me they were useless to him, which given it’s the national currency was slightly bizarre. He then insisted I pay the remainder in dollars via PayPal and added an extra 7% for the pleasure. The whole experience was really upsetting and totally marred our stay, my children were also witness to it which upset them too. I do wonder if my husband had taken the call he would have been so aggressive and rude. Richard saw I was upset and offered an apology on behalf of his brother who he said was stressed out as he was babysitting - seriously, not my problem. You should NEVER speak to guests the way he spoke to me. I made a mistake not rereading the email, nothing more. The fact that he only accepts payment in cash dollars says a bit more about his honesty than it does mine. No other hotel we stayed in over 4 weeks has ever insisted on cash dollars, and all I tried to do was rectify the problem. I’ve seen a few other reviews that criticise this place on other forums, so I am in no doubt that there will be some nonsense comeback from Christian. But we both know what happened and it was unacceptable.
