Oh dear, this hotel has seen better days. Tired, I think is the word. During a two-week trip to Southern India we stayed in five different accommodations including a houseboat, beach huts and hotels, but sadly finished off our trip with a five-night stay at the Hindustan, which was the worst accommodation we stayed in. The staff were all pleasant - especially the chef in the restaurant who greeted us every morning with a smile and soon got to know what we liked, and the gentleman who attends to the pool - the room was cleaned daily, and had terrific views, but the whole hotel needs some money spent on it. Quite a bit of money! For instance, instead of a double bed we had two single beds pushed together. Bad enough as that is, but the sheets didn't even fit! They were too short due to the odd shape of the bed. This proved to be really, really frustrating. The most ridiculous thing, however, is that upon check-out you're handed a leaflet detailing all the tourist places we 'could' have visited had we known about them earlier! These included the Janardanaswami Temple, Golden Island, Kappil Beach, the Sivagiri Mutt ashram, Sri Mahaprahuji Btak (a devotee to Sreenathji), and even elephant rides around the village of Puthenkulam. Our son checked-out a day before us, and this happened both times. Surely, anyone could see this leaflet would be more beneficial at the start of our stay! It actually fills me with sadness to think that we missed out on visiting one of two of these places

Villa Luca is a small, cozy resort with just 9 rooms, 5 mid size rooms on the ground floor and 4 wooden floor rooms in good size on the first floor. All rooms on the first floor have a good sea view and one room on the ground floor has the sea view. There is also a small swimming pool and a tiny restaurant with all the tables facing the sea. 1 room on the ground floor has a jacuzzi…..few deck chairs, a hammock and a good view point is a plus….visit atleast once in your lifetime for a peaceful and quiet stay for 2-3 days…..

Fantastic hotel and staff, I want to mention: Praveen, the general manager, made the time to come and speak to us , very professional! Suralal, Adarsh and Deepu, the front office team, what can we say, these 3 were amazing, helpful, nothing was too much trouble...and kept in supply if many cups of coffee! Vishnu, Kavitha and Prashant, the housekeeping team, excellent service, room was spotless every day, and the towel art was fantastic, Lovely surprises! Sunil, the chef...it was like having our own private chef, the dishes he cooked for us were out of this world, the flavours were amazing something deliciously different every day! And thanks to Ambili and Kishnar Kutty, the kitchen team, their help with the dishes and the service they gave was impeccable. Thanks to Raju (day) and Mohan (night), the guards, very attentive and always a wave and a big smile. Finally Kilson and Anil, the maintenance team, always on hand to help with any problems. Thank you all, you should all be so proud of yourselves, the hotels reputation only has you all to thank.

Our stay at the Gateway Varkala was truly memorable - all thanks to the signature hospitality of the Taj Group. The location of the hotel is great and the view from our room was phenomenal. Although the property is an old one the warmth and efficiency of the staff make up for it with their ever smiling helpful attitude. Once payment is made, their responsibility ends. Room Condition: I saw different photos of hotels and got different rooms. I feel that I got fooled. Parking: No dedicated parking is available. I parked on the road. General Manager: He is very rude. On the call, he told us he would serve food, but upon arrival, he denied it. Room Size: Don't book standard AC rooms; they are very small, and you won't have any view. Overall Review: You will get plenty of options with this price. If you book this, keep your expectations low.
