They deserve 5 stars alone for the fact that they had a generator powering the entire resort during our visit which coincided with 11 hours of lead-shedding per day (stage 6). Deep in the Southern berg a short distance from Underberg (on a terrible road), this little gem is part of a greater resort called Drakensberg gardens, all managed by the Gooderson group. The actual facilities are sparse at fairways but guests have access to the all the facilities of drakensberg gardens including the restaurants (which I never tried). Fairways offers a large pool with 2 separate jacuzzis, a games room and a kiddies play area. There is also a small dam where you can hire SUP's or kayaks. The dam is at the golf club house and the golf course is a big attraction here. The rest of the facilities are at drak gardens about 500m away. Some are free such as the mini water park, while others very well priced. Some of the activities include, tennis, squash, bowls, horse riding, archery, putt putt, zip line, rope adventure, etc Fairways is classified as a gold crown resort which I would think is a step too high. The chalets had no air conditioners or fans and while it does not detract from the experience it simply cannot be a gold crown resort without these. We were there during a heat wave and would have welcomed these. Also the finishes and furnishings are quite dated, I would think they need some upgrading to be able to maintain Gold Crown status. The chalets itself are reasonably private and comfortable with patios and weber braais. The loft room above the dining area makes it slightly claustrophobic and reduces natural light. Kitchen is small but well equipped. The frying pans should be non stick. Cleaning service was exceptional. DSTV channels were more than adequate. You can even hire dvd's. Cell signal and wifi was poor, although I don't think it was the resorts fault. The cell towers were on the property so cannot understand why connectivity was so erratic. Beginner hikers can try the on site trails and more advanced hikers can go to the Parks board about 3km away and try climbing the Rhino Peak or other hikes. The property has access to the River, and its well worth trying a swim in the crystal clear water at hippo pools if its warm enough. The shop at the main entrance stocks some basic groceries and if you need more stuff you can try the Elands Rest shop about 5km back on the main road, you can even get halaal food there. Overall a very relaxing break.
