This is an older hotel showing signs of many years of neglect and poor maintenance. The good news for future travelers is it is currently under renovation. There is constant construction noise from early morning until late afternoon, making a restful stay on the second floor impossible. The customer service lead, “Sonya” offered to move us to the first floor where it was quieter. However, the more serious issue for us is that the water is turned off from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, leaving us without running water or flushing toilet. Sonya offered to have water for the tank delivered after each flush. Unfortunately, on days she was off, the staff refused — apparently, this accommodation was not conveyed to evening desk clerks or to daytime clerk who served in her absence. Rooms are not routinely cleaned at this location. They do offer clean towels and empty trash. On request, they will make the bed. It appears the limited maintenance is a result of the renovation going on as water is needed for cleaning. It could also be a California thing — some environmental thing maybe? Furniture is old, scratched and in some cases broken (a drawer that doesn’t seat properly). Wall paper is coming loose in some places and shower fixtures old, and in need of TLC. Most of the staff is friendly and polite. When I advised the lady who provides the breakfast that the whole milk was going bad, she thanked me and removed it. The1% milk remaining in breakfast fridge expired today. The free breakfast is a reminder that prison food may not be the worst thing you could eat. Best bet here is bagels, cinnamon rolls or dry cereal and fresh fruit. Coffee is not bad unless you’re used to Starbucks or Peet’s. Although branded as a Holiday Inn, this property is independently owned by the same owner as the Fairfield Inn next door, according to an employee. It in no way meets the standards travelers expect of either company. However, this may be a reflection of the fact that it is under construction, staffing issues may be affected as well. The construction is only scheduled to be going on for about six months. Until it is complete, this hotel is not recommended for anyone who would pass on a primitive camp site in favor of a lodge.
