My husband and I stayed at Whakaipo Lodge for three nights. The accommodations are comfortable and homelike. Angie is a fabulous cook, and we had the pleasure of dining with Angie and Garth one evening. (Be sure to request the Pavlova for dessert!). On the nights we had other dinner plans, we had drinks and appetizers with our hosts, and learned so much about the area of Lake Taupō, and their lives there. They had great recommendations for how to fill our free time, arranging a beautiful boat trip on Lake Taupo, and directing us to the Opepe Reserve, an ancient forest of amazing trees, and the cacophony of cicadas and bird song. (We’d been a bit skeptical about that forest walk, because Garth had raved about it so much, but he did NOT oversell it!). Our breakfasts were delicious, with freshly made pastries, yogurt, fruit from their gardens, and cooked options. The Lodge setting is peaceful and tranquil, and Garth and Angie could not have been more welcoming.
