Oakwood Resort

We had a family break at this resort in August and apart from the beautiful sunsets and beach , which the kids loved I cannot recommend this hotel. The rooms we were in were very dated and worn and we very quickly discovered that they were not serviced daily, so despite the high cost per night you had to make your own bed and try to figure out how to reuse the cardboard "glasses" numerous times ! There wasn't a comfortable relaxing seat in the room so we had to use the beds to watch tv. One of our major concerns was that despite been classified as a "resort" there were many rooms that didn't have a balcony or outside porch and there was no where outside on the extensive grounds where you could find a bench or a lounge chair to sit and enjoy the summer weather. We eventually did find two picnic tables behind the indoor swimming pool however it was a daily race between a few old folks like ourselves to get to those two tables to be able to sit outside !! For a resort ... that is embarrassing . We tried the restaurant the first night and despite the slow service, looked like a staff shortage, the meal actually was better than anticipated. Unfortunately the bill was screwed up so it took a while to sort out. The beach is beautiful but its a fair walk from the hotel though a subdivision of expensive looking homes. Overall a disappointing stay.

We arrived September 2 for two nights in the Honeymoon cottage. We were told there was breakfast in the dining room. There was no breakfast. We later learned that the dining room was closed for the season post Labour Day. The front desk misinformed us as did the sign posted. There was no housekeeping and our towel rack kept falling on the floor. We were stranded for food and had to leave the resort to eat. There was a pub on the resort grounds and one meal there was enough. Very very poor to misinform the public. Our two nights was almost 800.00 for no food or housekeeping. If you are looking for a relaxing and luxurious resort, keep looking! The Oakwood resort has a lovely golf course, and the grounds are very pretty. However, the rooms are in major need of a makeover. We stayed in the Pine Lodge deluxe 2 queens beds. The room smelled of old mildew. The carpets were old and moist with humidity. The shower curtain had pink mildew and the bath drain would not drain after showering. The air conditioner did not work. The room was dark and dingy looking. I must say that the beds were the only thing that’s were acceptable. We went for their all you can eat breakfast buffet and literally left after 5 minutes. I’ve had better cafeteria food. Liquid eggs, boiled sausages (gray in color) and microwaved pancakes/waffles. What a major disappointment! Spent over 500$ for 2 night stay. I tried to voice my concerns to the on duty manager Dillon and he offered us a no charge late check out! A late check out was the LAST thing we wanted! We actually left at 6:45am just to get the heck out of that room! This place is a campground with a nice golf course. Do not stay here if you’re looking for a nice resort.

Myself and two other friends recently stayed at the Oakwood FRI - SUN. WE have stayed many times before so we do love the Oakwood and private beach! Dave's pub has great food, and we love the change room option on arrival and departure .This girl weekend was a level above with the extra attention Norm gave us. We locked ourselves out of our room 2x in less than an hour.... Storm'n Norm came to our rescue each time and no complaining! Norm and his happy go lucky attitude and awesome customer service certainly made out stay enjoyable. THANK YOU NORM from the 3 amigos :) see you next year

My wife and I picked this resort because we thought we can have a get away and stay on property. We picked it for beach access being told it was a short distance. Not knowing we had to walk through a subdivision on open street. Also gate to enter was difficult. For the price it was disappointing. Carpets were old and worn, the place needs a lot of redoing, tv’s so outdated, iron board and iron very old, drawers did not open well, shower curtain disgusting, toilet seat was a commercial seat with no cover, very old. Put it down to the staircase the smell of the old carpet on the staircase was old, smelly and not vacuumed. If we would have been able to get our money back we would have left. Cobwebs all over the deck and chairs on deck old and dirty, coach inside old and smelly. If the price was cheaper we would have been ok with all this but it was too prices for area. We stayed in town and came home late and left early. Chairs outside and hammocks need attention. Dirty and cobwebs. Not enough staff to support this place.

Our two night stay started on a very negative note. We arrived at 2pm and the front desk assistant (who was overly friendly to the point that it was irritating) immediately offered us an early check-in. We were happy to hear that this was possible until he added: “at $25 PER HOUR”. Where do you get charged for an early check-in? And by the hour? We have never been charged by any hotel, ever. That night when we mentioned this to the manager at Dave’s Pub, she could not believe her ears. Secondly, the rooms are not serviced daily. You can text housekeeping to ask what you need (toilet paper, soap etc). When I phoned the front desk to find out why rooms are not serviced, I was informed by the same attendant that it is “no longer industry standard”. That might have been true during the pandemic, but this is definitely no longer the case. We travel widely and all hotels service rooms now daily. In our bathroom the curved shower curtain rod was installed wrong way around, with it curving inwards over the bath, and not outwards like it is supposed to so that it gives you more room when showering. This resulted in having even less room in the shower and the shower curtain clinging to your body while showering, this was really uncomfortable. New vinyl flooring was recently installed in the bathrooms, but it was layed over the existing tile. Because the old tile was not removed, the imprint of the old tile lines is now visible on the vinyl floor. It looks cheap. The golf course was reduced during the pandemic from 18 holes to 9 holes. The games room under Dave’s Pub had been closed down. The sitting room at the end of the hallway in the Oak Lodge looks like a storage area of excess furniture - all chairs, couches and lamps were pushed up against the outside walls. This area is a beautiful sitting area with so much potential - but the furniture needs to be nicely arranged so that it feels inviting. It seems like the facilities are reduced and what little is left, is not taken care of or enhanced to make it better. The positives: the bed linen was good quality, a Keurig machine is provided. Towels were thin. The gardens were nicely kept, beds were mulched, flower baskets and planters were beautiful. Overall this was not a great experience. Dave’s Pub was good and service excellent. But for the hotel - management will have to step up and give attention to where it is needed. This used to be a real gem, but it’s starting to loose its shine.

My boyfriend and I stayed last weekend for one night. I do agree that the prices are a little high for rooms that are outdated and I do really miss the jacuzzi which I think for the price is important. However, our rooms were clean and the beds were very firm and cozy! Our swim was nice and refreshing and the pool was clean. Brunch was also great and we had a sweet waitress (Lauren) and the lady at the front desk (Mandy) was very nice as well.

This 102 year old property has character, soul and is just the place you are looking for. This is one of the best kept secrets in Grand bend. With crystal clear blue Lake Huron beaches, to romantic sunsets, to amazing food with Pool, Golf you name it and you will get it. Post Covid the resort had reduced the golf course to 9 hole, and has closed out hot tub and Poker room and I wish that with patrons and guests support the coming year they are able to reopen these. However, nonetheless you will be not disappointed. We went on a romantic get away and we were not disappointed. We also went to Pinery Provincial and Rock Glen during the day as they are nearby the facility. The facility has over 124 rooms with varying ranges of luxury and the decor calls for a old world charm. It felt like home. After a long period of time we felt the comfort. The rooms are so well kept and updated with maintaining the old world charm and comfort. The Dave's Pub and Grill has such a nice view and ambience and food variety is good. After a long day of relaxation (lol) you want a hot warm dinner or lunch then this is the place to go to. The gym and Pool area are so well maintained and so well kept that it really felt like home. The facility is pet friendly and offers housekeeping and guest services 24 hours. Our hosts were very welcoming and responsive. We are already planning to go again during this summer. And Yes, the Private Beach is a cherry on the Pie. That is the most lucrative thing. We really enjoyed our stay.

Disappointing - food left in the fridge from prior reservation, room not fully cleaned (empty water bottle in between the beds), and hasn't had an update/renovation from the first time I was there 30 years ago. When I mentioned at checkout that the room wasn't fully cleaned they asked "would you like a receipt?"
