The Hôtel des Vosges is family-run, and the family clearly take great pride in their work. We stayed for a week, and were given a friendly, personal welcome. The rooms are spacious and scrupulously clean, and have been modernised quite recently. We had a room at the back of the hotel with a balcony, overlooking the mountains and the River Doller. The views were delightful, especially with the autumn colours changing in the course of the week. We chose the 'demi-pension' option, including breakfast and dinner (on Sunday, lunch instead of dinner). Breakfast included fresh fruit salad, home-made yoghurt, fresh bread and Viennoiserie, cold meats and cheeses, fruit juices and home-made jams. Dinner consisted of four courses, creatively and imaginatively crafted and beautifully presented. We were touched by the personal approach - towards the end of the week, a member of staff approached us to discuss what new dish the chef might make for us that we hadn't tried before! The wine list is amazingly extensive and the staff are knowledgeable and helpful about wine. We tried a Gewurtztraminer, a Riesling and a Pinot Gris, all from the domaine of Côtes de Rouffach, and were impressed by all three. There are a sauna, hamming and jacuzzi. We did not use them, but saw some hardy souls making their way from the heat of the sauna for a dip in the Doller.
