Hotel Guanaja is an absolute paradise! Our cabana was steps from the beach where our kids could fish, snorkel or take scuba lessons at anytime during our trip. Every morning the grounds were maintained perfectly and fresh, sweet coconuts were gathered by the friendly gardeners, chopped a few times with a machete, and ready to drink for the ultimate natural morning hydration. We discussed our activity plans for the next day every evening with Wilson, the manager and everything was always perfectly ready to go. Most days we would pack a cooler with lunch and beverages, and Darryl, one of the local guides on staff at the hotel, would take us to a picture perfect caye without any other people in sight where we would spend most of the day exploring the coral reefs, fishing, and searching for iguanas, hermit crabs and the like. We were given historical facts constantly about the island and the cayes around the area whenever we would take a trip on the water or in a small taxi that could come and drive around the island on a tour. It is truly an incredible $5 taxi drive along the coast and into the towns within the mountains of the island. We rarely ate outside of the resort, the food, prepared by local staff was absolutely incredible. Many people come from around the island and other resorts to eat and hang out in the relaxed setting in the bar, so you know you're in the right place. Highest recommendation goes to the conch soup but the whole fried snapper with coconut rice and beans is close! We have been to several similar resorts in the caribbean and Hotel Guanja is the REAL DEAL for a beach front, relaxing and adventurous hoe away from home. *We traveled from Miami to Roatan and took the ferry over to Guanja, traveled to several towns and villages while we were on the island with our two sons under 13 years old, and at no time did we feel unsafe in any way..
