We checked in here for our visit to the Oberammergau Passion Play. It really could not be bettered as a base for this, and for exploring this beautiful part of Bavaria. Recently restored, the rooms here are large, comfortable, with balconies, looking out over this quiet, but lived in village. We overlooked the local school, but the sound was great, and not intrusive. Altenau is a farming village, and the Dorfwirt was bought by the locals when it threatened to close. Frank and Petra are the current tenants, and they really could not have done more to make our stay pleasant and enjoyable. Breakfast is a hearty selection of 'Semmel' Bavarian for rolls, with Wurst and Kaese (sausage and cheese). We started with fresh fruit salad some mornings, and yogurt on the others. Plenty of lovely coffee, a really good start to the day. Rest days are Tuesday and Wednesday so, although you'll get breakfast if you're staying, the restaurant you'll miss, which would be a shame, as the food for dinner is a real treat. Our highlight was Zander (a river fish) served with an asparagus risotto. Lecker! Vegetarians are well catered for, too. The menu is not over-extensive, but something there for everyone. A car is not necessary. From Munich airport, take the S-Bahn to the main station, train to Murnau, then local train to Altenau. This line will also take you to Oberammergau, and other places in the area. There are lots of well-signed walks from Altenau. We will, most definitely, be returning!
