The Tropicana just reopened a few months ago after an extensive renovation. The common areas are lovely - beautifully decorated and very serene. The location of the hotel is great - just a minutes walk to the town square and with multitudes of restaurants and shops all around. But the best is the employees we encountered- KEVIN, GERARDO, SAMUEL, and ERICK who went out of their way to be of assistance. This was a last minute booking done through the Hilton website and we booked a rate for “NEW HOTEL AND $50 USD credit” which included an “upgrade where available”. We did book the lowest room type available because we saw on another travel websites that displays numbers of rooms left that there was plenty of availability and this was just the night before so we were taking the chance that an upgrade would be given and we also hold the top level in the Hilton loyalty program. At check in we were denied an upgrade as the front desk manager said we could only move one category up room to the “double deluxe” room which she said was not available. I did pull out my phone and show her that the Hilton website was showing the double deluxe room as available for the nights we were staying. She said that was wrong- there are only 2 rooms designated as “double deluxe” and they were occupied. She did offer to upgrade to the next room type (King with terrace) for $130 USD per night and then. If we would have booked this room type from the get go it was a $95 difference per night. She then offered the rate of $80 per night. Out of principle we declined this and asked her to check with someone to see if there was anything else that could be done. We were informed she would do that and notify us. After 45 minutes of waiting in the room assigned to us we had heard nothing. We decided to go out exploring and ran into the same manager who said “Oh, yes- we can’t do anything “. Not sure if she was planning to ever inform us of this or leave us hanging. So now to the room- the entry level room (2 double beds) is extremely small. With 2 of us with only a carry on and backpack each we were maxed out for space. The windows open onto a common walkway so if the curtains are opened anyone can see into your room. The lighting in the room is very dim- actually it is depressing. The bathroom is also tiny. Though there is a fan it was not very efficient. After a few minutes of the shower running the smoke detector went off. The front desk responded promptly to the alarm- calling and sending someone up. We were told to open the windows in the bathroom. This would have to be done by climbing atop the toilet- see pic. The complimentary Diamond/Gold continental breakfast is served on a nice terrace. The presentation is very nice. Choice of fruit or juice, coffee or tea, and pastry or bread. The second morning of our stay we opted to have this inside at the restaurant as it was chilly out-we were previously told we could do this. This was confusing fo
