Le Relais Du Bois Saint-Georges

This is a beautifully appointed hotel on the way north and a really relaxing place to spend the night. Close to historic Saintes, but with the first bit not having a pavement, it is best to drive in. Our bedroom was very comfortable and had a terrace. The swimming pool is beautiful and a good feature. The grounds are extensive and beautifully looked after, and the bird life, including Matilda the resident Swan was diverse. A good place to stay.

I get the impression that most people use this hotel as a one night stopover. We had three nights and enjoyed the garden with its film set lakes with ducks, a swan and various other wildlife. The house is a converted farmhouse with an eclectic mix of old and new furniture. Our room was long and dark with a small terrace overlooking the garden, adequately furnished but with those awful hard rubber pillows the French seem to like.The bathroom was ok but could have done with another hook or two to hang towels which we were encouraged not to have changed. The food was fantastic, definitely worthy of five stars, but be warned the very small menu did not change the three nights we were there. Breakfasts were disappointing, delivered in a basket either to your room or a table, the pastries were rather dry, coffee in a thermos pretty awful. You have to say on arrival what you want for breakfast and unless you specifically change it, you get the same every day. Nearby Saintes had interesting old remains and walking through exploring it was a pleasure.

We spent 2 weeks traveling in France and stayed overnight on our way from SW France to St Malo. If this review was about the restaurant it would be 5 stars, the dinner was superb and the chef and staff should be commended. We know the French love food and the care, taste and presentation of the dinner was unique and exquisite. If the review was about the hotel we would however have given it no better than 3 stars. Other reviews list out the positives and we agree, friendly helpful staff, a small green oasis in a commercial area by a motorway, very easy access. Safe parking. Quirkily decorated, clean. We arrived at 4.30pm and sat outside reading in the sun in pleasant surroundings. For my wife and I it started a debate about are we looking for a good nights sleep or a cultural experience? I would hate to own a private hotel because the branded travel hotels have raised the bar so high. So where this hotel doesn’t measure up is in bedroom investment where the branded hotels excel. No air con, (difficult to sleep as the room was too hot) only 3 plug sockets in the room and as one was for the tv and another for a light which was needed. Bed not up to best standard. Inadequate lighting ie difficult to read in bed as no bed side spots etc. No tea or coffee making facilities in the room. No safe. Bathroom adequate and quaint but needs updating. Modest size room. Very average breakfast.

We stayed for 4 nights and our experience was very positive. Our rooms were decorated individually which our children and myself loved as we were in the Jaguar car room! There is a lovely pool that we swam in every morning. The grounds are also delightful with jumping fish and a beautiful swan called Matilda in one of the large ponds. The food in the restaurant is mind blowing with amazing flavour combinations. We had moule one night which my wife really enjoyed. Can't wait to go back again and try out another room.

Dîner d'exception, raffiné de haute volée. Service et accueil très agréable. Le prix un peu élevé car ne comprenait aucune boisson. (au moins l'apéro et /ou café) à ce tarif me semble attendu surtout pour une soirée événement. Avis pour le côté restaurant.

Réponse à la directrice du Bois Saint-Georges qui a réagi à mon avis du 19 janvier, en ces termes : « Madame J. Vous êtes membre d’une association dont la devise est : « culture et amitié ». Vous ne l’avez visiblement pas faite vôtre. Lors de notre dernier dîner vous avez tenu à conserver un siège libre à votre droite pour y déposer votre sac à main. Cette place était destinée à une nouvelle adhérente ! Et si le dîner n’était pas à votre goût, vous auriez pu en faire état au président ou à un membre du bureau présent ce soir-là, au lieu de le publier ainsi. Pouvons-nous espérer qu'au nom de la devise du Club et de votre fidélité à celui-ci, vous nous fassiez, Madame, l'amitié de vous souvenir de soirées agréables ? La Direction » Madame la Directrice, J’attendais vos excuses et l’incident aurait été clos. Je suis très étonnée par votre réponse (quoique ?). Je n’ai pas à me justifier de quoi que ce soit, je veux seulement rétablir la vérité, différente de vos élucubrations. 1) Vous m’appelez « Madame J. » (?), alors que je suis Madame B. 2) Vous écrivez que je suis « membre d’une association », alors que je ne fais pas partie de l’association concernée, même si les thèmes qu’elle choisit sont passionnants. J’aurais dû me contenter de la première partie musicale (riche de sa devise « culture et amitié », que vous-même n’avez pas faite vôtre, pour reprendre vos propos quelque peu pompeux)… et ne surtout pas enchaîner sur les prolongations dînatoires. 3) Vous écrivez également que j’ai « tenu à conserver un siège libre à [ma] droite pour y déposer [mon] sac à main ». En effet, j’avais bien une place libre à ma droite, mais peu m’importait, et un sac y avait bien été déposé, sauf qu’il n’était pas à moi ! J’ai envie d’ajouter : « Non, Madame, ne me grondez pas, ce sac n’est pas à moi ! ». Vraiment risible, votre attitude, si elle n’était grotesque. Les convives à notre table peuvent en témoigner. 4) Vous écrivez ensuite : « cette place était destinée à une nouvelle adhérente ». Invention encore, car l’une de vos collaboratrices est rapidement venue retirer la chaise concernée avec énergie, passablement énervée (contre qui ?). Vos hôtes à cette table ont pu de ce fait mettre un peu plus d’espace entre eux. Là aussi ils pourraient en témoigner. 5) Vous me reprochez enfin de ne pas avoir fait part tout de suite de ma remarque sur le dîner. Madame, d’habitude je dis les choses en face, mais là, vu votre réaction hystérique concernant la chaise occupée par un sac, je ne tenais pas à mettre mes amis mal à l’aise en en rajoutant ! En conclusion, vous espérez que je vous fasse l’amitié de me « souvenir de soirées agréables ». Je préfère oublier celle-là !
