Lost Reef Resort

I ordered curry Penang and it tasted like the cook poured a half a box of salt in it! I was terribly disappointed. I allowed my friends to taste my food too and they also said it was way to salty. This was especially disappointing since I had to wait a long time to get served. My other friends were nearly finished with their meals before mine came.

A born Canadian, and having lived more than 35 years in the Caribbean, I have a pretty solid read on places. This quaint tiki bar in Riversdale (a tiny village), presents an American focused menu with lots of choices. Viola truly did hit a home run. The quesadillas may have been the best I have ever had. And full marks to Cesar, for the great service and dry sense of humor. We are definitely eating there again.

Loved the stay at Lost Reef. It's in Riversdale, north of Placencia, and far enough away to not be crowded. They had a really nice pool, and were on a pretty beach. The cabin was perfect, and had everything needed. There were enough trees and mangroves to make it feel jungly, not just clear cut for beach access, and we appreciated that. They had delicious food at their restaurant, and everything the owner recommended was spot on. It was great to see locals eating there too; always a good sign. And one night, a local wedding reception party ended up there, yet another good sign. They had some DJ's performing while we were there, and it was a great vibe. Ample parking, easy to find, and the grounds were clean. Highly recommend checking it out.

Our small family stayed recently and the grounds are indeed super beautiful and felt very secluded. (We were trying to avoid crowds so this was definitely a plus!) The sea was filled with sargassum but that was the be expected this time of year and after wading out a few feet you can mostly avoid it. The pool offered an alternative swimming option and the pool was very clean and while it did have other people in it, it didn’t feel overcrowded. The rooms, while mostly clean, had a bit of a moldy smell and could definitely use a bit of an upkeep. Nonetheless, the room was quite comfortable. As the location was roughly 20-30 minutes away from other restaurants and grocery stores, we had planned to have most of our meals at the on-site restaurant. Upon arrival we reviewed the menu, and while it was a small menu, we were satisfied with the options offered. The first night when we sat down for dinner (roughly 6:30 pm) we realized that we may need to reconsider our meal options for the rest of our stay. Half of the very limited menu was not available and at 7:30 pm we were informed that our food would start to be prepared shortly; they were finishing up with the owners order first. A little after 8 pm we received our orders. Our waitress didn’t ask if we wanted to order drinks or offer any apology for the very long wait time. As we are also in the tourism industry we tend to be very understanding and lenient patrons and did not make any type of fuss the night. We quietly waited for our meals. We decided to give them one more chance for breakfast the following morning (it was a holiday so maybe they were short staffed the night before so why not give them another chance) however, we were then informed that they don’t offer breakfast (contrary to what we were told on the phone and what we read on previous reviews). We really wanted to love this place. The location on its own is a plus, but the price we paid for the room and the service we received were not worth it. I do hope the owners (who seemed to be very nice people) can make the small improvements necessary to have it reach its full potential.
