I have just returned from a four night stay at the Gasthof Nutzkaser (Cost €432 which included breakfast and local tourist tax). I travelled on my own as my husband was unable to accompany me on this occasion. I know Berchtesgaden extremely well and would often come to the Nutzkaser to eat when I have previously been on holiday. When I originally booked this accommodation last October (2023), I did so by direct contact with the hotel. I could see from their website that there was a choice of rooms with various names relating to their corresponding views - Mountain panorama, Meadow, South, Bay window etc. I requested a room which had either a mountain, panorama or south aspect view. I stated that as a single traveller I was still prepared to pay whatever rate would apply for one if these rooms. However, I was informed that as a single person they could only offer me a Meadow view room; it would have a double bed and a balcony. The other types of rooms were for couples or families. When I arrived I was given room 211. This room is at the rear of the hotel and faces East. It overlooks a car parking area and garages and is above the kitchen. Sitting out on the balcony at busy periods for the kitchen (lunchtimes through to late evening) you are accompanied by the sounds of clattering pans and utensils, washing equipment and staff shouting along with all the smells wafting up to where you are sitting. If you've left your balcony door open these smells will end up and linger in your room. I have to admit that on shutting the balcony door you couldn't hear the noise from below, although I wear ear plugs. It seems that single travellers are not important when it comes to money-making, so we get allocated the rubbish rooms and don't warrant a nice view. OK, my view was undoubtedly pleasant overlooking a meadow, but I overlook a meadow at home in Scotland. As it was classed as a single room I had a duvet and ONE pillow, both feather (be aware if you are allergic to feathers), there were no spares to be found in the room. I ventured downstairs to see if I could find someone to ask for another pillow. It was a busy time I admit, and it's fortunate I speak German (more about that later), but you would have thought I was asking for someone to bring me the Holy Grail and I was told in no uncertain terms that I would have to wait! For someone who perhaps does not speak German that response may have come across as abrupt and rude, well it was in fact. About an hour later my pillow was delivered to my room, although it was so soft it made little difference. Had I been staying longer I would have probably gone out and bought a firmer pillow as I have arthritis in my neck. The room itself was as one would expect. Furnished in wood and panelled and typically Bavarian style. It was clean but clearly very tired and in dire need of a refresh. The plug sockets on offer were few and dated and it's a must that you bring your own adaptors and charging USBs. There is a
