I had an exceptional stay at the Sagecliff Resort in a cavern room on my way from California to British Columbia. It was gorgeous and felt very safe for a single woman, traveling on my own. So on my way back, I decided to drive out of my way to stay there again. When I looked at availability on my return, there were only two “rooms” available. One was a “condo” and one was a “yurt”. Pricing them out, it was only a little more to stay in a condo. I booked the morning of my drive and arrived finally at the resort around 7 pm, tired and hungry and ready to settle in for the night after driving all day. The woman at the desk very casually told me that there was a $120 cleaning fee for the condo. I was shocked, and definitely would NOT have booked that room if there was any notice of this. I told her there was no notice of this (either on line in the description, or in the confirmation email sent to me upon booking). She said there was nothing she could do. I asked to speak to a manager, and she said there was no manager on site. She then phoned the manager, and told her the situation. Honestly, she didn’t seem to care at all that I was as upset as I was. The manager told her she should call “reservations” and she said she did so and we needed to “wait for a response”. I let her know that I would accept a refund of my payment, and I would get back in my car and go find another hotel (an exhausting thought, given the remote location of this place). Alternatively, they could put me in a different room (or yurt), or waive the fee. She said there was nothing she could do but wait. I waited 45 minutes before I left and let her know I would dispute the charge. I asked her to ask the manager to phone me. About 15 minutes after leaving, the manager phoned me, apologized, and said she would refund the charge. I do not understand why this didn’t happen immediately. So here’s my public service announcement if the resort fails to change their information: THERE IS A HIDDEN CLEANING FEE WHEN BOOKING THE CONDO. If you are staying for one night, it makes it ridiculously expensive. And while the resort is lovely, the management doesn’t seem to care much about solving problems. Also, for some reason, there is a random change “pending” right now on my credit card.
