We stayed at Club Hotel Dolphin at the beginning of August 2024. Before I give a run down about our holiday, I want to say we had a great holiday, met lots of people, the staff were fabulous and we had the opportunity to visit many wonderful places around Sri Lanka. On arrival at the hotel, we were informed that our room wouldn’t be ready until 2pm which we already knew, so we had around four hours to wait (a very long time when your journey has been around 14 hrs!). Although we already knew this, we were disappointed to find out later in our holiday that our room had been empty for over 24hrs before our arrival, so feel that, knowing guests were arriving, it could have been ready for our arrival time. When we were finally given our room key, we entered to find out that a bed had not been prepared for our son. This was sorted within an hour, but in actual fact, given the time they had in preparing our room it should have been in place from the outset. Our two older children, who had a separate room, were given a king size bed to share and despite asking for separate beds, when they got their key, the beds were pushed together to make one, so they had to rearrange the furniture themselves. Their rooms were quite a distance from ours and I feel this could have been managed better, especially as I had previously emailed the hotel to request that the rooms be near each other as both older children are diagnosed with autism. Two hours after we had been given our rooms, our luggage had not arrived and we had to telephone to request it being brought to us. We would have been more than happy to transport it ourselves, but were informed that it would be brought to us. Due to this, our youngest son burned quite badly as we hadn’t anticipated how strong the sun was with it being an overcast day. This was totally our fault as we hadn’t put any sun cream in our hand luggage – we always put swimming costumes and a change of clothes in hand luggage, just in case our cases get lost with the change of aeroplane on a long haul holiday. Food There was a wide selection of food available everyday in the main restaurant. Most of the food was spiced, so if you’re a fussy eater, you will struggle. There was always plain boiled rice, a wide selection of curry (for breakfast, lunch and evening), different breads, one potato option (never fries) and options for different fish and meat, usually cooked in some sort of sauce. During the evening, the ‘cold’ room would have a selection of salads (this was never open during lunch). The cold meats and cheeses available at breakfast were never available any other time of the day, which was a shame. The deserts were always available and varied day to day. The ‘snack bar’ was okay, but there was always a wait for food as it needed to be ordered. There had been other guests who had experienced ‘microwaved’ food, so I would recommend checking food has been freshly cooked. The hotel advertised afternoon tea, but this was not rea
