Secret Bay

I visited secret Bay from March 22 to March 29, traveling on the nonstop United flight from Newark to Dominica. Taking care of the pre-arrival online immigration form, is a huge advantage. I was through immigration in less than five minutes. Luggage was on the carousel. A non-pushy porter was at the ready, assisted me with my bags and we exited the airport terminal. And Tyrone from Secret Bay was waiting in line to drive me to the resort. Airport transfers were included they were private. Never been to Dominica, Ty gave me a brief overview on the way to the resort, including a quick drive-through Portsmouth, the closest town to the resort. Without going through a play-by-play of every moment of every day, which I very easily could do, I’ll state a few aspects of my visit. I’ve been very fortunate to have traveled to several islands in the Pacific, including Hawaii. I’ve been to the People’s Republic twice and some tropical areas in Asia. The week at Secret Bay, was simply spectacular. I do not believe in all my travels. I had a more relaxing week away. Secret Bay, with no cliché, is a secret solitude that is unmatched in the Caribbean probably let alone in the Western Hemisphere. I believe there are more employees than guests. The grounds are so meticulously maintained. I’m a single traveler, I had Ylang Ylang One Villa. Martina was my villa host. I cannot speak more highly of her. She was so incredibly gracious, it’s beyond words. Yet unimposing. Tina made sure that I had fresh fruit, local snacks. Tina as well arranged my schedule to service the villa both morning and evening. Things I didn’t even ask for and I really didn’t request anything, I had anyway. There was nothing to request. The villa was spotless. The outdoor living area with the breeze off the mountains, it’s hard to explain unless you experience it yourself. Bath facilities were immaculate. A large soaking tub. I did not use the tub per say, however it was incorporated into the shower. Which had a rainfall head which was refreshing. The plunge pool outside, completely private was, again just spectacular. I was in and out of the pool several times a day. Private lounge chairs were adjacent. I cannot stress enough regarding privacy. This is delicate to mention, I am not a “naturalist” nor is this resort intended to be represented as such, however you needn’t be concerned whatsoever if you chose to not wear swim attire on your villa property to sunbathe, etc. Wildlife, unbelievable. I was fortunate on three occasions at dusk to see several parrots fly by. There were no mosquitoes, or insects of any kind, at least that I saw. The whole property is built onto the mountainside. It was a great walk back-and-forth from my location to the main building where the restaurant is. Although if you’re staying out farther away, there are golf carts and drivers at your disposal. We had a fabulous stay at Secret Bay. The villa is crazy amazing and the location feels… well, secret. It was extremely quiet and well appointed. The beach and pool were not crowded; they were clean. The food and drinks made with care from natural ingredients (Dane is the guy you want to see) and were generally really tasty. Where the resort fell from 5 to 4 stars was in the service. We had many issues with scheduling things (meals to go, carts to take us places) that just literally never happened despite us reconfirming multiple times. Additionally, the restaurant service, especially at dinner was inconsistent. One night: amazing and quick. Another night: undercooked fish and 30 min inbetween courses. If those things can be improved upon, this is as close to 5 star as it gets.

We had an amazing stay! It was our first time to the island and I can’t say enough great things about the resort. From our villa hostess Tashida who took such wonderful care of us during our stay to the rest of the staff and general manager Craig. We had issues with travel home and they went above and beyond to help us with an additional night accommodation. We felt like the only couple there almost the entire time. We had the most amazing views and th heated plunge pool for me was a game changer! We did the Titou gorge and waterfalls excursion which was perfect to get out and about for a day. We also had a couples massage onsite which was amazing. We will definitely be returning!

I stayed here for just over a week with my husband who is actually from Dominica so we have had the pleasure of staying all over the island and I was really looking forward to seeing if secret Bay lived up to my expectations and I’m glad to say it did. Their accommodations are stunning. Well maintained and the wonderful details such as the fully stocked kitchen based on your selections pre-arrival, we also appreciated the snacks on the pick up from the airport and the attentiveness of all the staff during our stay. However our villa hostess Fanya was absolutely incredible. We still talk about those breakfasts she made for us each morning and how well she took care of us during our stay. We also put the security team to work too as we were out so often because it was Creole Fest, so we often come back during early hours of the morning in our in our rental needing the security team to take us in a buggy to our villa. We stayed in Yang Yang ll. During our stay on one of the excursions which we arranged ourselves I got an eye infection which I had mentioned over breakfast to Fanya and within what felt like minute she had arranged for a doctor to come onsite. She was brilliant and treated it and it would’ve been much worse had Fanya not taken such swift action. I even got a personalised follow-up from the hotel manager Craig which was a brilliant touch. During our stay we had a private dinner party for my mother-in-law‘s 70th birthday and the team did a wonderful job transforming the outdoor space with beautiful decoration and we had the private chef experience which my family who attended really enjoyed and it is something we will treasure as a memory forever. The spa was wonderful. We had a couples massage. I also paid for one for my cousin as it was her birthday during our stay. They also prepared a small cake for her and it was easy to arrange everything typically via the messaging service on the iPhone they give you. I love secret beach, the cocktails on the beach and again the service there from the team was brilliant. We ate at the restaurant and also had room service and the food is delicious. Of course like everywhere there are things that could be different. The outdoor gym needs work and for people like us who do like to use that on holiday, it would be a nice touch to update the machinery and at the least get some fans outside. Also the pre-arrival communications can be slicker mostly from a responsiveness standpoint. We will absolutely stay there again likely opting for a bigger villa so we can bring more family with us next time, it’s so wonderful as my husband is a Dominican to see how wonderfully they represent the island!

HHad a little hiccup with the staff, but management really went above and beyond to resolve the situation. The property is absolutely lovely! The villa is just stunning. The location is great, offering good privacy. They organized a day tour and took care of every detail, which was fantastic!

We completely and thoroughly loved our stay at Secret Bay. What an incredible place! Not only were the staff very welcoming, helpful, always there to meet every need, but the resort is true paradise. Every possible thing we could need for a week-long stay was provided, including stocking of the kitchen with whatever we requested from local and sustainable sources on Dominica. Many times it felt as if we had the place to ourselves, between the very private villas that are well spaced out and with lush tropical vegetation throughout the resort, to the limited access by sea to Secret Beach. We love the small boutique type of resort and the limited number of villas that really make it easy to unwind, truly relax, and enjoy solitude. We will be back!
