Casa de São Domingos

Our first couple of nights in Portugal this trip. A wonderful place with very well appointed rooms and secure parking. We were welcomed by Manuel who was excellent throughout our stay with good recommendations for restaurants to consider and sights to see. The higher elevation of the property gave us great views from our room and privacy. The pool area looked lovely although we chose not to use it during our stay. It was an easy walk to the shops and restaurants. The welcome port wine was appreciated and indicative of those little touches the hosts provide. The breakfast was excellent the common rooms comfortable and classy.

Gorgeous property and very clean. Breakfast was delicious with hot and cold choices and even a friendly cat greets you at the door. Easy check in and free parking. Hot this time of year in the Douro valley so the pool was an added bonus on an already beautiful place.

My wife books the hotels while I drive, she found this one on Tripadvisor, we check Tripadvisor on every hotel we stay at. We haven't stayed at many B & B's since Ireland 25 years ago but I am glad she found this one. Hotel is set high on the hill with a lovely view of the town and valley but no city noise or crowd. We used the hotel as our base for our tour of the Douro Valley wineries. Room was comfortable, nicely furnished. Host was welcoming, insisted on taking our luggage to the room. The host, second generation inn keeper recommended great restaurants for dining nearby. They provided a nice breakfast with eggs cooked to order. We stayed an additional night, overall wonderful experience. Highly recommend!

The Casa de Sao Domingos was a very classy, well run guesthouse in the town of Regua in the Duro Valley. Manual the owner was responsive in our corespondence and this is a family run operation with at least 2 generations of service. Private gated oasis just outside of the town. Restaurants are a short 5 minute drive or 15 minute walk. Rooms were well appointed, breakfast in dining room was abundant and cozy. Will prepare omelettes to order and staff is very attentive and helpful. Eat at Table Aneto Wine and restaurant. Won't be disappointed, but need a reservation. Small and great service, food and wine pairings. The River restaurant was kind of a mess both with service, reservation, and food was only average. Regua is a cool town, but removed from many of the attractions we were interested in, ie. wineries, tours etc. and needed to drive 30-40 minutes on the mountain roads (had a rental car) to get to any of our tours (vineyard tour with Duro Walks and Antonio is phenomenal, Olive Museum, boat tours). Met great people staying here who we enjoyed dining out with. All in all, other than location and access to rest of the valley, it was great. If you are afraid of heights and narrow roads, don't drive it yourself.

Casa de Sao Domingos, where do I start..? From our arrival to check out - everything was just great! The place is absolutely beautiful, in a stunning setting with amazing views; gardens were immaculate, the rooms nice and clean and had everything we needed, very comfy bed and pillows; the staff were lovely and nothing was too much trouble! But the thing that stood out for me the most is how peaceful the place was, considering a road right next to it - there was minimal noise, or maybe we were just so chilled that we didn't notice :) My personal highlight was the pool - and even though the hotel was fully booked we had the pool all to ourselves for 2 days!! In the evenings, we would return after a day of exploring, grab a beer from honesty fridge and sit in a furthest corner in the garden, looking at the stars and reflecting on our day - does it get better than this? Breakfast was very good, a great selection of meats, cheeses, fruit, juices, and omelette super tasty. Honestly, I would go back just to stay in Casa de Sao Domingos again, I don't think I have ever been this relaxed as I was while staying here!

There are such glowing reviews of this casa, but ours is not one. Upon arrival, we were virtually sped up to our room by a young man at the reception. He told us this was his family home. My guess is that his parents may have retired and he has taken over. One reason we book these smaller places is because we enjoy getting to know a bit about the area from the innkeeper. When asked a question, he thrust a business card in our hand with a few restaurant recommendations and things to do and he was off. The property is lovely, but the area of the home we were in was very dark and grim. The walls were thin and you could easily hear guests around you. I believe there must be some nicer rooms to justify some of the better reviews. We asked for a taxi , and I must say he talked his friend into giving us a quick ride down the hill, which was appreciated. We prearranged a taxi for the next night.. I said 6;45 . We gave up waiting outside after about 20 minutes . I mentioned this next day. I was pretty shocked as he started yelling and arguing about the time i had said. . There was obviously a misunderstanding, but a poor way to handle it. We did not enjoy our time in Casa San Domingos and would not recommend it. Maybe his parents should come out of retirement.

Have just returned for another nights stay after being here earlier in the week on a biking trip. Lovely setting overlooking the Douro river and hills beyond. Found the host very welcoming and obliging when sorting our bikes. Rooms quiet and pool a lovely respite after a hot morning cycling. Breakfast great and would thoroughly recommend staying here if you were in the region.
