We spent two wonderful nights at Kifaru Lodge. The main building and individual lodges overlook the bush and are tastefully designed and comfortable and there is a very welcome pool in which to cool down. The Lodge manager and staff were absolutely brilliant, both welcoming and efficient., and the food was excellent. Yes, getting there does require a long drive which is extremely bumpy, even by gravel road standards, but this all adds to the anticipation and feeling of being in the middle of nowhere. The Lodge is closely affiliated to the Rhino Momma conservation project, being located just outside the reservation. Many of the activities are therefore focused on rhino (though not exclusively). We arrived in time to go on the 'Sundowner Drive', the high spot of which was having tea (or, if you preferred, G & T) and snacks less than 10 metres from where white rhino were grazing, completely unphased by our presence. We also went on a morning game drive. For both, Leroy was our fantastic guide - his knowledge of rhinos (and other wildlife) was encyclodedic and only surpassed by his enthusiasm for all things rhino, which was positively infectious.
