We arrived late after a long ferry journey, only to find a few other couples also trying to check in. Despite clearly seeing guests waiting, the member of staff stayed hidden behind the wall at reception and only shouted through after a few awkward minutes. The reception desk is bizarrely low, so you can’t tell if anyone is even there – not the most welcoming start. The hotel itself feels tired. Grotty, stained carpets and old, ridiculously heavy doors set the tone. Our room was a trek from reception, and once inside we discovered there was no light in the bathroom. Too exhausted to complain, we just used our phone torches. The plug situation was another frustration – the bedside sockets had been replaced with USB-only ports, but not the now-common USB-C ones. Just one usable plug socket, all the way across the room. The pillows were rock hard and there was only one per person. The room was noisy all night with a faint electrical buzzing sound, plus loud generator noises from outside starting and stopping randomly. While the bed was clean, it wasn’t particularly comfortable either. Overall, it served a purpose because we needed a place to crash, but I wouldn’t choose to stay here again unless absolutely necessary.
