We travelled to Fatboys late September and stayed for 13 nights. We were lucky enough to have the Overwater Bungalow. The “Resort” is timeless and perfectly Pacific Island. If you want manicures, gourmet meals, massages and to laze by the pool this is definitely not for you. The bungalows are clean and fairly basic with all the quirks of a pacific island stay, like level bathroom floors, old fashioned kettles and mosquito coils to light at night. The beds all have mosquito nets and ours was comfortable. The overwater bungalow is currently the only one with air conditioning but I can’t say we needed it as the evenings were pleasantly cool. There was a small bar fridge which I would recommend you stock with duty free wine as it is incredibly difficult for anyone, including Management to get any white wine which is less than 5 years old. It is possible to snorkel right off deck of the bungalow but the tide is often quite low. The snorkelling itself was magic around Fatboys. We have snorkeled in lots of pacific islands and we haven’t seen such a variety of fish in the one area before. The giant clams are amazing. We had a tour of Kennedy Island, a bbq lunch and a snorkel. It was beautiful. Imagine eating freshly barbecued lobster and mahi mahi after a lovely snorkel off deep ledges and then a peaceful rock in a hammock under the trees. On another day we took a small polycraft to nearby islands, with a picnic lunch provided by Fatboys. It was idyllic. Deserted islands, white sand, coconut trees and no one else! We had a half day trip to Gizo. It was interesting and an opportunity to shop. The tour of Bambanga Island village was eye opening. We were lucky enough to see the kids at school from kindy to grade 5/6. The have literally nothing to help with their learning. I would recommend taking some books, paper, readers anything to help out if you are able to. Fishing was fun! Roderick and Ravia both tried hard to find fish but alas they were quite elusive. We caught 2 Spanish Mackeral, a baracouta, a small skip Jack tuna with several tries. It was well worth the effort as the sceneray was spectacular. I would recommend the trip Munda, if you’re not prone to seasickness. It was great to see the lagoons, with a stop at Lola Resort and Skull Island. We also checked out Imagination Island and were very glad we had stayed at Fatboys. The meals are basic but yummy. Plenty of fruit for breakfast and fish or crayfish most days for lunch and tea. Our Spanish Mackeral was cooked to perfection over a number of meals.. The new Owner, Brodie is fantastic and has heaps of plans to increase the comfort, without losing the appeal. Mano, the Manager is so helpful and engaging. Leah, number 1 is a wealth of information about the area as is Roderick and they are always there to assist. Leah number 2 is new and an absolute delight. Margaret and Tiro in the kitchen are happy and they would do anything you ask, if they are able. Grace, the house cleaner is also a gem. We t
