The Elizabeth Country house is a hotel with a beautiful physical property that simply doesn’t meet the high price of lodging with either services or amenities. We checked in on Saturday (there’s a locked gate, and you will need to call when checking in), and after a reasonable check-in process, our hotel experience declined quickly. By far, the biggest problem is the lack of sufficient air conditioning—the temperature in our room was 28C/82.5 F this morning at 1030. Monday night, when trying to play pool in the common room, the temperature was 31C/88 F. The hotel also lacks in-room amenities—there was no TV screen, or desk, and charging ports near the beds are limited. There was a plug near my bedside, but it didn’t consistently charge laptops or phone, even with a dedicated EU plug. This is also not a full-service hotel—there is breakfast, and snacks available in the afternoon, but there’s no bar or full-time restaurant. There are good restaurants nearby in town, and an expensive honor bar in the shared kitchen. However, that leads me to our next problem—the ice machine, which was shown to us upon check in, didn’t work from Sunday to Tuesday. There was ice in the machine when I checked out this morning. Additionally, there is no in room refrigerator, so while there is a supermarket across the street, you can’t chill wine or beer easily. Or at least you can’t when the ice machine isn’t working. Some other more minor complaints include lack of lighting in the shower, a particularly rough floor rug, and lots of biting bugs around the pool area. At a much lower price the Elizabeth Country House might be a good option, but it’s simply not worth the price. I had a much better experience in the AC by Marriott last night.
