Hotel Regina e Fassa feels like a relic from times long gone in Eastern Europe. Like one of these holiday heavens, concrete for the masses. It’s more like a public institution than a hotel. Worn down buildings, the rooms smell like old ski boots, the food situation is horrendous, manic loud music supposedly to entertain children plays through out until 22.30 every night…and it’s not even cheap. We actually booked the nicer one of the two hotels managed by the same group. Payed for the nicer one, but got stuck here instead. Everything about it feels like a scam. Just don’t go here, is my best advice.

The hotel rooms and ski locker room were okay. The hotel was slow to replace food that ran out; eg one jug of milk and not replaced when empty (many other examples). The food was generally of reasonable quality with the exception of the free wine (awful), coffee (awful) and draught beer (awful) in the bar. There were about 10 bottled beers on the drinks menu but none were in stock. The bar was taken over by a kids club every night between 2000h and 2230h. This involved horrendous german music at a ridiculously loud level and dancing. Even with the door closed and us sitting round the corner in reception, we could barely speak to each other. The hotel needs a quiet area for adults (the majority) to sit. The hotel is several km from any ski slope. There was a hotel bus south on the half hour, and north on the hour. This was inadequate for the number of users and usually made 2 runs in each direction after a scrum to get skis loaded. They need a bus in each direction every 15 minutes at peak times. The same thing happened on return journeys at the end of the day. The resort ski bus works okay but is about 500m walk down an icy path. You have to pay 3 Euros for a day ticket but only if a ticket inspector gets on; there doesn't seem to be any other way to pay. We only paid once but used the bus most days. It would be better if 10 Euros was added to every ski pass and the buses were free.

We thought this was great for what was officially rated a 3 star hotel! We travelled with friends and all our rooms were spacious with both a double and single bed, a walk in wardrobe/ cupboard and ensuite shower room. Everything was very clean. We had requested quiet rooms away from the bar / entertainment area and the hotel had noted our requests so we were on the third floor on the opposite side of the hotel. The food was very good - a buffet breakfast with lots of choice including cereals, yogurt, cold meats, eggs and bacon, toast, croissants, cake and fruit. Again in the evening, you just helped yourself to all the food. It was great to have lots of vegetables to choose from and lots of choice in general, plus complimentary house wine, which was also pretty good. My husband can eat a lot and he was more than satisified! The barman who was also the Maitre D was very friendly. Our only issue was the location if you didn't have your own transport to the ski lifts as Mazzin is between two of the main towns in the Val di Fassa. The hotel ski shuttle bus ran three times to the Pozza and Campitello lifts, both morning and afternoon but only accommodated 23 passengers so some of us couldn't get on a couple of days and had to walk in ski boots down to the main road to catch the service bus. Later in the week though the driver seemed to fit in additional runs. We would happily go back in the summer with our own transport.

This was a good hotel with a few problems. For skiing, the food was a good buffet with decent choice and plenty to eat for breakfast and dinner. There were healthy options of fruit and salad and I liked the variety of risotto and pasta (including pizzocheri), so the hotel made and effort. Buffet food is rarely as good as some more expensive restaurant food but I have no complaints as it was nice and fuelled the days of skiing. The hotel staff were all nice and helpful. We had no communication problems as most staff spoke English but I can understand some Italian so all went well. The rooms are very big with lots of space to sort your skiing clothing. The public spaces in the hotel were good and they served some tea and cake in the lobby after skiing. The downside is that there are some rooms that have really bad views from their window. We initially had a room that only looked out to the bins at the back of the hotel and you could not see up the hillside due to the balcony above. if you go to the Dolomiti for the scenery and like the mountain environment (like us) please check which room you will get. The holel did move us, at our request, and we got a nice room at the front of the hotel. The problem with the new room was, as many others have said, the bar plays VERY loud music that can be heard in the rooms until late. Earplugs were required if you wanted to get sleep to be on the slopes early. (Not great for safety if you need to sleep with earplugs.) We used the hotel shulttle bus. The driver was very good and it was on time. The queues for the cabin at Campitello were too long in the morning so we started to go to Pozza di Fassa as the lift and slopes there were quiet and you can make your way over to Alba easily. We also used the public bus from down by the tourist office (not too far to walk) to go to Canazai but there were long queues there too.

Chaos at dinner time. Long queues, food ran out, undefrosted desserts, and food quality was not great. Wine at €24 a bottle seemed expensive for the food quality. Room cleaning was not great. WiFi exists, but often not working or so slow that times out. Hotel doesn't have piste maps and doesn't sell ski bus tickets. Ski room arrangement is not convenient. Ski room does not have boot warmer.

This hotel is located some 500m from the centre of Mazzin. There are 4 floors and around 120 rooms in total. The hotel has daily entertainment for the little ones and a ‘resident’ musician in evenings. Restaurant operates a buffet style breakfast and dinner. There is a large bar/entertainment area. Reception staffs are Italian and are trying their best to explain things in English. There are 2 customer’s lifts and 1 staff only lift. Ski room is at garage level but beware of the icy ground when stepping outside. Check-in is relatively straight forward. Soon you will find out each department is operating different system. You have a room number/key, a table number, a ski locker number/key (also prepared to have exactly €10 for the locker’s keys deposit at the ski rental place – still not sure if this rental is part of the hotel operation) – 3 different numbers. Finally, the bar operates with a charge card system, which means pre-loading credits before you can ‘buy’ a drink from the bar. But the card is not ready until the next day. Room is spacious, with plenty of storage and a digital safe. Beds are tidied up daily but floor is not hovered. There are no drinking tumbles, so bring your own or use the flimsy ones in bathroom. Bathroom is okay, apart from the shower door is clearly broken for sometime, so you might need to take care of the escaping water. Also, the usual convention of leaving towel on the floor for replacement does not apply. Ski room offers a padlock system to secure your skis (not much use for snowboard). There is a small locker to store your ski boots, but it is not heated so expect damp and cold boots. Naturally, you need two keys. Breakfast starts at 7:30am. Buffet style consists of cold and warm pastries. Cold cut and cheese with 2 types of bread. Cereals, yoghurts and fruits. Hot breakfast is scrambled eggs with either sausages or pretend bacons; it’s okay to fill you up. Coffee is just some hot drinks. Dinner starts at 7:30pm. Buffet style but it can get busy very quickly. Best to get there early. Highlights is the starter, a good selection of cooked (cold) vegetables, some cold cuts and salads. Primo usually is pasta and risotto. A better tomato sauce can be found in most Italian home. Main course is underwhelmed. Dessert is not quite defrosted; and the general manager is doing his best to plate them out (not plated by kitchen brigade). Fruits are good though. Wine are all €24 a bottle. With this price tag, it need some quality food to match (and probably need that charge card to pay – maybe). There is an hourly hotel shuttle service to Pozza di Fassa and Campitello. First bus to Pozza di Fassa is 8am and Campitello at 8:30am (speedy breakfast is essential). You can ski from Pozza di Fassa to Alba then join the main ski area in Canazei. If you choose to go to Campitello, expect 1 hour queue at Col Rodella. Our best option is walk to the nearest ski bus stop (500m) at the Mazzin car park (please allow 20 minutes walk t
