The Red Lion

Excellent carvery with generous portion of meat. The carvery was not cold unlike most carverys and the beer i had on draught (bass) went well with it. Friendly staff too. Was busy ok the sunday i went but still managed to get a table ok. Would sure return

We stayed for 3 nights for a wedding in Matlock. Decent size rooms good sleep, comfy bed, Good breakfast with copious amount of toast, Good beer, loved the peroni, and the staff and locals in the pub were really friendly. Well situated just off the main street. Only negative was the lady taking breakfast orders on the last morning, looked and sounded as if the customers were an inconvienience, but 1 small negative could not outweigh the numerous positives. Best of all was Ted, the friendly Cockapoo. Thank you Red lion for your hospitality.

My wife and I really enjoyed our two night stay at the Red Lion. The pub itself is very nice inside, and serves good beer. There is a nice beer garden at the rear, along with a car park. There is a small seated area at the front. Our room was a pretty decent size, with a roomy ensuite. It was clean and well equipped, (hair dryer included). The food was of a great quality, with good sized portions. Most importantly, the staff were very friendly and took a genuine interest in the customers stay. I would definitely stay there again if in the area.

What a fantastic place to stay! Me and my wife were travelling on to Sheffield but wanted to find somewhere to stay for a couple of days of sightseeing to break the journey, and I found the Red Lion from an on line search. Google is definitely your friend! We pulled into the car park alongside the Moot Ales micro brewery in the garages behind the pub - what's not to like! We were greeted by, and continued to be served by the most friendly and attentive staff throughout our stay, and the room we had was spot on, and spotlessly clean - complete with a four poster bed. With the brewery in the back garden, and all available on draught or cask, it would be rude not to sample them, so I tried them all... Highly recommended! (and they sell bottles as well, so I came home with 24 in the boot of the car, ready for hopefully, some long hot summer evenings in our own garden... oh yes, they also have great garden areas to sit in as well!) Breakfast was freshly cooked and plenty of it, and if you want to try the evening menu, the crispy pork belly is something special! The pub is brilliantly placed as well, 5 minutes from town, and tucked back just off the main road so you don't get traffic noise or street noise, and just off the beaten track so it seems to have its own set of locals, and they certainly support the pub as there were plenty in on both nights we stayed, and they are all equally as friendly as the staff. I'd recommend the Red Lion to anyone looking for a great place to stay, and if you haven't been to Matlock before, its hidden gem, such a beautiful town with loads to see and do, and spectacular scenery.

We were a group of 4 couples - senior citizens from different parts of the country who met on a river cruise a couple of years ago. This was our second reunion. We had booked for two nights bed and breakfast. The first impression was how welcoming and helpful the staff were. The rooms were very comfortable with modern en-suites. The quality and presentation of food, and the service, was excellent and we all had dinner on both nights at the Red Lion. One of our party is a Coeliac and requires gluten free food. There were plenty of choices and courses could be adjusted if required. The bar is well stocked and and has a large selection of beers and ales. There is a warm family type of atmosphere everywhere and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay - so much so, that we have all booked again for 2025. Look out Lee! We are coming back 😆

Just back from a lovely stay at the Red Lion over the weekend. All staff were friendly and welcoming. Room 6 was amazing , large with very comfy bed, great shower, all clean and well maintained. Breakfast was tasty, hot and plentiful. We had meals on both nights - lovely. Thank you to the whole Red Lion team, we will definitely be back soon
