It is difficult to be complimentary about this allegedly 4* hotel. Re Fire precautions: Information about the closest fire exit should have been on the bedroom door. It was not. In the event of a fire any alternative to the main staircase was not immediately evident. Therefore the only exit would appear to have been down a total of 4 flights of stairs using 5 different changes of direction. There were places on this route where the emergency exit signs would probably not have been visible. Re the bedroom/bathroom: Washbasin was cracked Grouting round bath discoloured No shelf on which to put toileteries Niagra type shower only with no shower cap provided for ladies Shower controls unmarked. Potentially the wrong combination could cause a full immediate shower with water at maximum temperature. Dangerous for children, elderly etc. Re the breakfast: Fruit consisted largely of great chunks of apple and a few other fruits crudely chopped All hot food rapidly became cold as the containers had no under heating Re reception: Having booked with the hotel’s online system 6 days in advance we were staggered to find no immediate record of our booking on arrival early in the evening. Then the receptionist pointed out that the booking had been made for the actual time of the booking and, that as we had not turned up, full payment had already been taken. At the time of booking there had been problems completing the form which had presumably defaulted to that day. Clearly I had made an error which I should have noticed. However, even if I had noticed the error that night, the hotel would have retained the payment as it requires to be notified of any cancellation at least two days in advance. Perhaps the hotel should have realised that a booking made from over 100 miles away in the middle of the evening was unlikely to be fulfilled that night? In the circumstances we were forced to pay for a second night or look elsewhere. As I am 81 I was not inclined to find other accommodation at that time of day and without access to my laptop. A subsequent email addressed to the Manager was ignored until I sent a reminder. An unsympathetic reply from the desk manager (presumably receptionist?) emphasised that its no refunds policy applied “even in cases of genuine error”. The hotel website gives no email addresses for the Manager or to make comments or complaints and it seems impossible to contact the hotel owners, which appears to be the Deventure Group, by email.
