The hotel lacks the hospitality, quality and warmth of old. I remember it from thirty years ago when it had great ambience, a memorable stay and gormet food. The front of house team seem unconcerned for the guests and appear to have missed out on any customer service training - they are unprofessional and unkempt. The rooms are still good but service and breakfast is very poor and our requests were met what seemed like scorn and a surly response - I felt I was in a Fawlty-esq parallel! No wine list available in the restaurant 'we're running down our stock in preparation for a refresh'. Later, playing cards three of us in the bar over a drink, manager started packing up the bar - removing our table candles and stacking stools on tables, at 9pm - unbelievably rude! Breakfast is grim - selection of three cereals, flavoured yogurts, prunes, grapefruit, rounded off with Rose squeezable honey. Today it was awful - there was no wholemeal or brown bread available, so I opt for white with my scrambled egg - thin piece of toasted cheap white entirely covered in thin layer of featureless scrambled egg. I was told I could not sit at an empty (sunny) window table, because 'it was not set for breakfast'. It seemed to me like it's being run into the ground - echoing other reviews, it does not offer good service, value or memories. The lack of management responses, to previous reviews, speaks volumes!

Super old building. We stayed for 2 nights for my husband's birthday. Our room was lovely with a super view, beams and a sloping floor. The shower was fast and hot. The bed was a standard double but we would have preferred a larger one. The staff were friendly and helpful and the bar is a lovely place for a drink and the dining room is very pleasant. Could you provide more vegan/vegetarian options for breakfast, maybe some plant milk? We hope to return again in the future.

I've often said I'd like to stay overnight at the Rising Sun in Lynmouth and when the opportunity arose I took it. We booked a double sea view room which was cosy and with plumbing appropriate to the age of this historic inn. This is a seriously characterful building with narrow, steep stairs and low beams. Be aware and you'll be delighted. If you want modern, then think twice. Lovely location overlooking the quiet harbour and an ideal spot to relax with a drink, either with a good book or to indulge in a little light people watching. The bar is lovely with a good choice of real ale, gin and as you'd expect, other drinks. We had dinner expecting the menu to have more fish choices, could be a seasonal thing. We did however appreciate the venison and an excellent bottle of red wine. Pleased to have at last ticked that box and would happily stay again when the opportunity arises.

The hotel is quite old with exposed beams and low ceilings. The rooms also are quite small. But the food was excellent. It is located next to the sea and in easy reach of the historic Linton to Lynmouth water powered cliff railway. This links the two villages, avoiding an extremely steep climb.

We originally visited this hotel in 2017 and had a lovely visit. This time we were extremely disappointed. Upon arrival we noticed a stale smell which was present in the bar & restaurant. Our room was next door to the main hotel in what was apparently an old fisherman’s cottage. We had a sea view but at £150.00 a night the room offered poor value. The bathroom was so small it was almost impossible not to burn yourself on the heated towel rail . The bedroom was also tiny for what we had paid. We ate in the bar that evening as the restaurant was busy , luckily we had booked as they were turning people away. I had look at the menu on their website to make sure there was plenty of choice so I was surprised when the menu we were offered only had 5 options, 3 were fish / seafood 1 vegetarian and a steak. I had the plaice which was ok and my husband had the fish and chips. Breakfast was average with limited choice, self service fruit, prunes or grapefruit a few cereals and yogurt, the cooked breakfast had been kept warn so the bacon & mushrooms were dry. We decided not to eat in the restaurant the following evening but after our meal returned to the Rising Sun for a nightcap, it was 10.20pm and the premises was is darkness with no access to reception or any public areas, luckily we had our key with us. It’s such a shame that standards have slipped, on our original visit the restaurant had a rosette for excellent food now it’s very average. The bar & restaurant could do with complete refurbishment and a deep clean. We would not visit again.

The location sells this place, it is in an enviable setting with some lovely views if you opt for a room with a sea view (10)….thats about as much as your £150 a night will get you. Don’t rely on getting a decent restful nights sleep as the noise we experienced throughout was relentless and insufferable. The mediocre breakfast didn’t do much to lighten the mood either. Decor and furnishings about as tired and worn out as we felt. Further issues have been raised with management to address, building maintenance and fire safety training required - but I highly suspect all was dismissed the moment we left. Ruined our trip, cancelled all plans for the following day due to tiredness, went home early. Definitely would not recommend staying here.

We had a wonderful stay at this lovely little hotel, positioned right by the harbour in Lynmouth. The staff were friendly and helpful, without being intrusive, The breakfasts were delicious, and the room was warm and comfortable. Parking at the Esplanade public car park was easy, I would advise buying a permit in advance that covers many North Devon car parks (but not all, take note of the list). Lynmouth itself is a delightful little place, Lynton is a short but steep walk up the hill, or there is the famous 'railway', which is worth a go. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about our visit. If mobile phone reception is a big thing for you, I had perfect 5G reception.

Amazing location, shame about the food and staff. We waited an hour for our food from a very limited menu, only one non fish meal on there. Nobody told us about the specials which would have been useful. One person had to have a starter and chips for main and when the other asked for their fish filleted, the staff wasn’t pleased and told us it would take a while. Eventually when we complained we were offered a free desert, which was fine. The two young members of staff were messing about setting tables for breakfast for the following morning while we were still eating and were heard to use the “F” word in conversation. We were made to feel uncomfortable with them doing this. Not worth the money.
