The boat ride to Lopud was beautiful. Arriving in the stunning alcove, where the promenade is lined with restaurants and bars. Lafodia looks impressive and we arrived full of hope for a relaxing stay. On arrival we were told to disembark and leave our suitcases with the bell boys to bring into the hotel. We entered the unimpressive lobby to a very unwelcoming welcome. The man on the desk checked us in, and didn’t bother to tell us with any information that would be crucial to our stay. Like how the half board package worked - that we were supposed to book our dinner table as we arrived for breakfast etc. We were told to sit down for welcome drinks as our luggage was brought up from the dock. It was then we noticed one of the bell boys enter completely soaked to the bone. We wondered what happened to him, and thought nothing of it… for now. We got our luggage and went to our rooms to settle in. The room was bright and clean, although there were numerous holes in the sheets. I opened my suitcase to find all my stuff was soaking wet. Bags were full of water, my pillow was sodden, all my clothes wet with sea water. Putting two and two together - the soaking wet bell boy - the suitcase full of water - it was obvious my suitcase had somehow fallen in the sea as the staff unloaded it from the boat. They just hoped I wouldn't notice. My partners identical case was bone dry, mine was covered in sea water (that crystallised as it dried). I went to reception with my case and explained the situation. The man told me it wasn’t his problem and I had to complain to a lady in the office that arranges boat transfers. When I spoke to her, she looked at me like I was insane and asked “why are you telling me this?” I explained I was sent here by reception. She told me to go back to reception where they spoke in Croatian for a while before she abruptly turned to me and asked “what do you expect me to do about this?” An apology would’ve been nice. Some accountability would’ve been refreshing, yet neither came. I requested they washed, dried and ironed all my clothes, and after a short debate over who should pay for this, the man on reception agreed it shouldn’t be me. Thankfully they cleaned all my clothes in good time and I could finally get changed and start our holiday. Sadly, this was an ominous start to a pretty dire week. I’ll keep the rest of my gripes to bullet points because, honestly, I could go on for ever about how bad this place is. Food - The menu is impressive and we looked forward to the food. Unfortunately, despite some really good produce, the chefs didn’t have a clue what to do with it. Particular low point was the tuna tartare. A textural nightmare. Mushy, lumpy and stringy. Every table who ordered it managed a couple of mouthfuls before giving up. I can only imagine it’s what eating cat food was like.
