Burg Gutenfels

Beware of so called "romantic castle hotels" This castle hotel had no warm running water, and no assistance or staff around to help you when needed. Furthermore, there were no taxi service in town, and you had to walk up a mountain and down again to get into the town which was really a real downer as far as Rhine towns goes. My experience, (very experienced traveler) was horrific.

Not impressed on arriving. Road to castle in poor condition and a nightmare to drive. Reception was cold at best. The room was not worth the money charged, large enough but rather smelly. The dining room was totally empty at dinner time and upon examining the menu (no prices listed) we determined it to be mostly coldcuts. Upon retiring for the night we found the bed to be crawling with bed bugs. Immediately packed up and sought the manager ( all this at 10:30 at night). We were blamed for leaving the windows open (bed bugs do not fly!). She then said that she didn't know what we were talking about but that the mattresses were new. Another person offered to go and look at the bed with my husband. Upon their return she reported to the manager that there were indeed bed bugs and our money was unhappily refunded. Drove for over an hour before we found anything open and that had rooms available. Stay away from the Castle Hotel Burg Gutenfels.

I stayed with friends for a hiking weekend. Beautiful small hotel - clean, very well maintained and awesome service. Checking in came with a small tour through the castle. We had rooms on the 4th floor. Great rooms with small kitchen. Water for free and Coffee machine. Everything you need was there. Great breakfast (inclusive). No restaurant (so you need to go out for dinner or order food) - but a self service bar with Beer and Wine and soft drinks. Absolute highlight is the Terrace with Rhine views. Sitting there with a glass of cold Riesling is just great (bottle comes for 13,50). The sauna looked great, but did not use it. Even though it is an old castle- there is even an elevator. 100% recommended! Will come back for sure!

We stayed for two nights in a lovely quiet double room, owners were lovely and very helpful. Breakfast in the Knights hall was also great and included. Fabulous views. A few tips, drive to main door to unload, less the better, if you have a big suitcase don’t drag it up the long way and many steps to reception , there is a closer lift and fewer steps. Our room was lovely but weather was hot and no fan, also a bar fridge would have been great. However overall highly recommended. Deutsches Inn below good meals.

Lovely castle hotel. The rooms are actually in the Castle. There are not many rooms so you don't need to worry about large, loud crowds. Great views over the Rhine. The rooms were spotless and large. Breakfast was very good. A great stay.

Summer 2022: This hotel is newly opened and has only five rooms. It was previously used as the owners' home and as a (larger) hotel several years ago. Since the hotel is now completely new, old reviews (before 2022) should be disregarded. Here is the review we posted to ***********, but we forgot to mention the sauna available to the guests in one of the towers and that the castle serves its own bottled still or sparkling water. If you have the opportunity to stay at this authentic medieval castle, you should immediately grasp it! It was difficult for me to believe that this 5-bed hotel is actually a part of this old castle, but it was. The service was exceptional and personalized, the rooms modern and comfortable, and included a full kitchen where we made dinner for the whole family. The gardens are beautiful and the view of course, spectacular. In the evening, we played games in the library with a self-service bar. The breakfast with warm croissants was perfect. During the stay, we felt that we were treated like royal guests by the owners of this beautiful castle after we have left, we are grateful for being allowed to stay there.
