Peaceful, tranquil location by the river Tyne. My last stay in the hotel was about 35 years ago and little would appear to have changed still very pleasant but a little faded by todays glittery standards. Good room rates.

On arrival we were greeted by a gentleman behind the reception desk who was very helpful and arranged for a table in the dining room for us to eat at in the evening. Our room was Number: 120 and we were told that it was at the end of the corridor on the first floor which we discovered to be the last room in the hotel, not sure if we were given this room because we didn’t book direct with the hotel or not. On opening the bedroom door we were quite taken back with one or two problems. There was no heating in the room apart from an oil filled heater that wasn’t even switched on and when we looked to turn the main radiator on we found that the heating system was switched off completely and there was a massive stain on the carpet which looked like there had been a leak at some time. The room was very basic and there was various sections of wallpaper that was peeling off the walls. The bathroom was very clean apart from the corrosion around the wall lights which was very off putting. Our dinner at night wasn’t great, my wife had the Sea Bass which was very small and I opted for the Steak & Ale Pie expecting it to be home made but when it turned up I could see that it had been bought in, the green beans on both of our plates were undercooked thus making them un-eatable, we mentioned this to one of the servers but nothing was done about it. Breakfast in the morning was self service and was OK apart from the fried eggs being undercooked which were sitting with raw egg white around the yolks, I had to ask for a fresh egg which need to be turned over to make sure it was cooked. On the whole we thought the hotel was tired and could do with a re-vamp in certain areas. The young lady that checked us out in the morning was like a breath of fresh air, its just a pity that all of the staff weren’t like her as one or two of them looked as if they didn’t want to be there.

I would have happily gone further afield in order to get a Decent place to stay. The first five minutes in the hotel should have been warning enough to tell us to go elsewhere. Carl Sunley. If you are still the Manager, please give me an email address that I can contact you directly on. You really need to know what is happening in your hotel. Your front of house staff need sacking!

Excellent Hiking friendly hotel. Very good warm and quiet rooms. Comfy beds and great shower. Location is by the river so even better if hiking in the Summer. Location is right on the trail and even has a pool if you have the energy. Beer was good and much welcomed. Excellent breakfast set us up for the next days hiking. I did not eat dinner, but heard it was okay from a fellow hiker. I ate at a local pub. Bed and Breakfast was definitely great value and will consider revisiting again.

We bought our stay through WOWCHER and things went wrong from the start .Trying to contact the Hotel was impossible with no one seemingly able to pick up a phone or answer an email .I thought at first that the Hotel had maybe closed down but i eventually got through by contacting Bespoke Hotels direct .All this to just book Dinner .WOWCHER sold it as Hexham - no actually nearly 6 miles from Hexham but in a really lovely spot .We were allocated a TWIN room eventually but we wanted a DOUBLE - which were on the website when i was trying to make contact originally but none were available when we eventually got through .I also have a back issue which means walking any distance or LOTS of Stairs is impossible but i do have a Mobility Scooter .They managed to swap our Twin with someone else's Double and we got one in the annex part of the building on the ground floor .I was doing so well with my walking when i arrived and actually just managed with my stick - all that was about to change .We drove around to our room and it became evident that i would not manage the walk internally to the Restaurant so i would have to use the Scooter .The Room its self was basic and in a definite need of a paint as the walls were marked but the biggest problem was the Heating .Even though it had the knobs to turn it up/down , they didnt work and it was on full belt. You ask any woman of a "Certain " age what the biggest problem is at that age and they will tell you its been too hot in bed at night .We have Polar Bears and Penguins wondering around at home as i like it really cold but the only way we could get the heating turned down was by going to Reception and she asked the Manager ? Give them there due , they did turn it down but by the time we got back from Dinner , it was full belt again .Some Man in the next room , let out an almighty burp , so you can tell how thin the walls were .The next problem was that it was dark outside , so i couldnt use the Scooter as i couldnt see where i was driving or over what and it was also raining and you cannot use them in rain so we had to drive back round to the Front Door . The Dinner itself wasnt bad but we thought quite overpriced .We had the Charcutier Board for 2 - 2 slices Ham , 2 slices Prosciutto , 2 slices Salami , 2 pieces Cheddar , a piece of Goats Cheese and a Baguette with some Piccalilli and Branston - £19 ???? As we had £50 F&B Voucher included , our Dinner cost an extra £27.90 with my Hubby having Fish and Chips (overcooked Chips) and i had Belly Pork - 3x3x3 inch with Mash and Red Cabbage - really boring . After Dinner we went back to the room and after watching some TV , we went to bed .I woke up around 1 ish and the Room was RED HOT AGAIN - EVEN WITH THE WINDOW OPEN .We coudnt leave the Curtains open as there was a Motion Sensor Security Light in the Car Park that was creating a Disco effect in our room everytime a random animal went past .Unfortunately the Curtains were that thick , they let very little cold a

Some staff members were cheerful and helpful, others much less so. We were walking, and it was wet. Nowhere to put muddy boots, no drying room, radiator and towel rail in our room not working. We were walking Hadrian’s wall - everywhere else we stayed had somewhere for muddy boots and at least a radiator to dry things on. Food very mediocre. Swimming pool/jacuzzi and absolute disgrace. Room very, very tired.

Front desk staff seemed unfriendly to us. The property looks tired, our room was not particularly clean. Advertized amentities such as a steam room and jacuzzi were not operating. Dinner service and menu were mundane at best. We were hiking the Hadrian's Wall Path, so the George was convenient. If I have occassion to walk the Path again, I will accept the inconvenience and stay somewhere else.

The hotel has the appearance of a typical and traditional English hotel in a beautiful setting with pleasant staff and reasonable food (dinner/breakfast)but the bedrooms could be a setting for a 50's period drama - there seems to be an obvious lack of investment.
