"Both my family and I have been going to Fordoun Hotel and Spa for many years. Firstly, the Spa staff are absolutely amazing! Last year when I went for a half day spa - the spa experience was amazing but noticed a few concerns. I went to lunch and at lunch in front of other patrons I was asked to settle my bill, when I told them that it was a birthday gift voucher of a half day spa, including lunch, they disagreed with me. I knew I had to pay for my glass of wine, but the whole lunch had already been paid with my half day spa. I went to the management office and left my card there to ask that someone from management contacts me to give them my experience. I walked out knowing I was in the right, and my lunch had been paid for. I was never contacted. I recently went to have my half day spa again and had a wonderful time at the spa. What I did notice is the rusting shower units, fruit that was off (I took a photo), cracks in tiles, towels were scarce when I showered in the changing room. It looks rundown. Nonetheless, I went down to meet my brother for lunch and had an amazing lunch. With a full restaurant I was approached again to pay my lunch bill and advised the waiter that it was included in my half day spa, they insisted I pay, even bringing the poor staff member from the spa to try and get me to pay. I was felt embarrassed and angry at the same time. I said goodbye to my brother and went with the spa assistant to the spa to find out what was going on. They were told that I needed to pay for my lunch as per management. I walked down to management and refused to pay for my lunch (wine was paid for) as it is part of the package, my husband bought the half day spa voucher, like he does every year that includes a lunch. Management insisted that I needed to pay so I asked for management to contact me on the Monday (I went on the Sunday) for the pure reason of I went in stressed, had a lovely spa session and then went home stressed. I did not want to talk to anyone. I advised the lady at the management offices that I would like to sort this out and not have to resort to social media to voice my frustrations. Nobody heard me and I was called the same day. I politely asked the person to contact me on Monday. The Spa Manager contacted me, and I again advised that the Spa is not the problem, it is a simple transaction between departments and could not understand how management could not hear me about this. I thanked her for her lovely staff but would like management to contact me to explain why this is happening. To date, I have not heard from anyone and as promised I am going to social media before another person goes through the same embarrassment I did - you made me look like a could not afford my lunch and that I was not an honest person by not paying. Shame on you for putting me in this position. To management: I will not be returning to your spa for further abuse. You are wondering why you are getting quieter in the Natal Midlands; it is because of"

"VERY over priced. Coffee - only 2 sachets provided. No option of tea. So either have one before bed or the morning!!! The only form of toileties, was a little round soap in a wrapper and an empty plastic bottle with a label stating "shampoo". Not even hand soap at the basin or a hand towel. Single ply toilet paper looked like rats had been at it. Mats in the bathroom had holes, as did the spare double/queen sized blanket for the single bed. No hairdryer. Electric blanket did not work and temp was around 3°. Thank goodness I had taken my hotwater bottle. Had 3 mis-matched cups, glasses, plates etc. Floor rug could do with a wash. Curtains are really thin and don't block out the lights from outside. Only 1 2-pin plug point in the room. There were various notices stuck with prestick on the walls indicating Rules, Tv guide, don't feed dogs, no smoking etc. Why not put all in a little flip file all in one place?? The single bed was comfortable and there was hot water for a shower. Location is good but needs loads of TLC. Don't think I will be going back any time soon."

"I have had a love affair with Rawdons since it opened in 1956. Through many changes it is still my go-to place whenever means and circumstances permit. This time my husband and I celebrated a birthday and a wedding anniversary and stayed for 3 nights. Our room was simply gorgeous, looking out onto the velour lawn and the lake in front, rose bushes to the left and fuschias to the right. We didn't want to get up off the padded seat in the bay window. My husband would have liked to take the shower back home! The staff were unobtrusive, dignified, competent and obliging. The grounds are in immaculate condition and an unending joy in every direction. We loved the 'private' pool area. Breakfast was indeed the proverbial fit for a king. I got the impression that the maintenance of the outdoors is of more concern than that of the rooms. Our beautiful room had three stains on the carpet, two missing screws to secure the opening windows, damage to a support strut under the table (a piece missing) and a big hole in one of the magnificent curtains. None of which detracted from our enjoyment of our stay. I was quite reluctant to leave and could have happily stayed for the next three nights."
