I confess we have mixed feelings about this place. If you visit the impressive and informative website prior to your visit, as we did, then there is no doubt you would be intrigued and probably ‘wowed’ by the prospect of staying here. Certainly it occupies an enviable location, sited within the attractive town of Govone, with lovely views over the endless vineyards, all located close to the world-famous wine-growing area of the Langhe. Whilst in many ways it is indeed a real gem, it is also definitely well hidden. So, if arriving by car, beware of the postcode and what your Satnav may make of it – we spent a considerable time touring the streets of Gavone before we chanced upon the correct address. A few larger, more helpful signs would have been appreciated! The restoration and conversion of the property, complete with shady patios, al fresco dining areas, a swimming pool and small wellness centre, is faultless resulting in a potentially truly relaxing venue. Unfortunately, there is no lift so expect to negotiate a climb up some rather unforgiving stone stairs. There is a small unsecured parking area opposite the hotel, which can be abused by non-residents. The rooms are indeed fantastic. We occupied "Suite Margherita" (2nd Floor) which consisted of a spacious bedroom, bathroom (with large shower), a small lounge, balcony as well as a separate terrace area (commanding views of both the vineyards and the neighbouring main street) – incredible. It was truly one of the most beautiful rooms we have ever occupied! Breakfast is served on the patio and consists of the usual continental fare + boiled eggs, all served on wonderfully decorative bone china. There is also a communal fridge and the option to purchase wine on site. However, what marred our experience was the lack of ‘atmosphere’. Everything was very hands-off with no help with the luggage. This was partly due to us being virtually the only guests there during our 3-night stay. The other factor was that Bruno and Fulvia were absent over this period, although they had arranged for some friends to come and do breakfast while they were away. The result was that our time there felt rather stale and sterile with many of the advertised services unavailable So, a lovely venue but, for us, rather soulless.
