We arrived at this hotel at around 4pm after a long day driving from London. Our initial impression was really good, beautiful old building with lots of charm. The receptionist was very helpful and sorted out parking for us. He then casually explained that we would not be charged for the 15 euro parking as the hotel had no hot water. He explained that it had not been working since morning, a plumber had been and ordered parts and would fix it the following morning. We agreed to stay the first night as were very tired and expected it to be working the next day. Our room was huge, very quirky but also quite tired, needing some painting but we actually felt this added to the charm. The following morning we had an amazing breakfast in a stunning dining room. We checked again and a new receptionist informed us the plumber was coming in the afternoon now, not morning as previously informed. However she said if not fixed we would not pay for the 2nd night. We decided to check other hotels as was meeting friends at 4 so needed to bathe etc. rooms in hotels of the same standard in the centre of gent on a Saturday last minute were nearly 300 euros and we wouldn’t be able to check in before 3 . As guaranteed it would be fixed we stayed and spent the morning exploring beautiful gent. On return we checked again, plumber was still not here. Our room now was freezing. We had to fill a bath with kettles, unsafe and not practical. To add insult the towels were damp with holes in. The next morning we checked out, it still wasn’t repaired. The same receptionist then charged us full price for 2 nights, no mention of the 2nd night free as promised. We complained that the hotel had not provided the basic hot water and heating for a whole weekend and we were not prepared to pay £180 per night . She spoke by phone to someone and then said we had free parking and would offer a further 50 euros off We were given an e mail address to complain to. I have contacted them twice, they haven’t even acknowledged it. I appreciate this issue was beyond their control but the way it was dealt with was disgusting. The hotel continued to accept full paying guests without providing basic facilities and quite frankly they didn’t seem to think this was a huge issue for the guests It is such a shame as the hotel is lovely and is close to the centre however on close inspection it is totally overpriced for what you receive The customer service is disgraceful and I would not advise anyone to stay here
