We booked here and stayed in Sturt lodges, a dog friendly 4 berth lodge. The arrival was fine, no offer of being shown to the lodge but it was easy enough to find with keys inside waiting for us. We’ve stayed at many lodge sites before and also own our own lodge in Cornwall so have lots to compare it to. Firstly, toilet roll is a joke. There was 1 roll provided with the expectation you go and buy more yourself. This is nothing to do with being more sustainable, it’s clearly a ploy to force purchasing from the on-site shop. This is not acceptable, and I would have been more inclined to understand if the site actually openly promoted recycling to start with! Having a ‘if you want to recycle you can’ policy is not good enough in 2023. We therefore had to go shopping on day 2 for more toilet roll! The lodge itself was lovely, bed was comfy and towels aplenty. It was clean enough, however was clearly a rush job as the oven wasn’t clean, windows were all dirty and decking not swept. Fairly minor things, but I expect better. There is a tea towel, sponge and a small amount of washing up liquid provided but nothing else. You have to bring your own salt/pepper/oil/disinfectant etc. Again- I have no issue with this, but it’s very annoying to only know about this when you have arrived. We really didn’t want to have to go shopping…we could have brought stuff from home if we had known. I’ve never been to a lodge stay and not had the very basics. The site itself is lovely, the duck pond is lovely to watch and the walks straight out on to Hankley Common were wonderful for our relaxed weekend with the dogs. We would come back again purely for location, but communication could be so much better to make the stay more enjoyable without the initial annoyance experienced. Toilet roll gate is one that really got my back up!
