I stayed at the Holiday Inn, which is one of the few full-service hotels in Fargo. It's a very old 1970s Holiday Inn that has had extensive renovations and additions over the years. Those changes have been more like lipstick on a pig than anything else. There's even an old-style pool that looks like a vintage Holiday Inn Holidome original to the 1970s. The lobby is bright and fresh looking. Hallway corridors leading to guest rooms in the massive property (one tower feels like a quarter of a mile from the front desk) are worn looking and feel more like a dormitory or institution than a hotel. Likewise, secondary entrances into the hotel from the parking lot are tired. The doors are supposed to be locked with only keycard access. But the doors don't lock, meaning anyone can access the hotel from the parking lot. Unlocked doors is a significant safety issue. I booked a king room months ago. I have IHG Diamond and Intercontinental Ambassador elite statuses. Both my reservation and my IHG preferences specified a high floor away from the elevator. At check-in, a Premium Room was still being sold on the IHG website and mobile app. The front desk claimed no upgrades were available. I was given a standard king room on the fourth floor right next to the elevator. That's very poor elite status recognition. Even if a suite wasn't available and the inventory showing on the IHG website and app was inaccurate, how does a front office manager or general manager not pre-block a guest with the highest IHG elite status into something at least on a high floor? The tower has seven floors. The first room was unclean. There was a dirty cleaning rag on the carpet, ***** hair on the toilet seat and body hair in the tub-shower. I was moved to a second room. The front desk clerk said she upgraded me to a room on the fifth floor. The room was right next to the elevator. While the second room was basically clean, it had extensive mold or mildew around the toilet and the baseboard in the bathroom. Not wanting to move to a third room, I accepted the second room. Despite showing photos of renovated rooms on the website, both of my rooms were old rooms that outside of a television looked unchanged since around 2010. No USB outlets, almost no accessible electrical outlets, and scuffed and scratched furniture. I actually had to move furniture and unplug lamps to find electrical outlets to charge my devices. That's how outdated the room was. To the hotel's credit, the front office manager promised a significant amount of IHG points equivalent to a free night. While that was appreciated, it still doesn't excuse the lack of cleanliness and lack of maintenance. It's also misleading to show photos of new rooms if your rooms aren't fully renovated or updated. My rate included breakfast. I never ate at the hotel. I tried two mornings. Both times the restaurant was full with guests standing in line to wait for a table.Only a small section of the dining room was being used. S
