Satara Rest Camp is one of the best locations in Kruger National Park, often referred to as "Big Cat Country." The wildlife sightings are incredible, especially for lions, leopards, and cheetahs. The camp itself has a rustic charm with Mopane and Marula trees providing shade, but the facilities are aging and in need of renovation. Check-in & Service Check-in was efficient but impersonal—just documents, keys, and done. No welcome or conversation. When we later had a question, the receptionist was rude and dismissive, showing no interest in helping us. Unfortunately, SANParks staff across the camp seemed unhappy and unmotivated, apart from the Duty Manager, who was the only one actively engaging with guests. Accommodation – Old but Functional We stayed in a basic rondavel bungalow for five nights. While the layout was simple and clean, the furniture was extremely outdated. The outdoor kitchenette was in better shape than expected, though cupboards were worn. The bathroom was functional, with a large walk-in shower and decent water pressure, but the whole unit desperately needs a refresh. Housekeeping – The Camp’s Saving Grace Despite the age of the bungalow, housekeeping was fantastic. Rooms were spotless every day, and the staff was friendly and hardworking. Dining & Facilities The Cattle Baron Steakhouse offered great food, but service was inconsistent, ranging from unfriendly to excellent. The park shop was well-stocked, making self-catering easy. The large pool area was clean and well-maintained. Final Thoughts Satara is worth visiting for its wildlife, but the service and outdated accommodation need improvement. We would return for the location but hope to see upgrades in the future.

Stayed for 3 nights in October in a perimeter room. View from room was OK, but not as good as other camps & no wildlife to be seen. Room was basic but clean. Cattle Baron restaurant was excellent. We stayed in Satara as this was reportedly the best place to see lions, which we did spot on a couple of days. Good shop on site as well as petrol station.

The cottage at Satara Rest Camp was simple yet clean and reasonably well-maintained. While it’s not luxurious, the real highlight is staying inside Kruger National Park itself. There’s nothing quite like being surrounded by nature, hearing the sounds of wildlife at night, and being close to animals and the park’s famous routes. It’s an experience that truly enhances any safari adventure and beats staying in hotels outside the park. A great choice for those seeking an authentic and convenient stay in the heart of Kruger!

My partner and I were excited for our Sunset Drive safari at Satara Camp, but our experience was ruined by the poor treatment from the guide, Ntokozo. We arrived first, hoping to secure good seats on the truck, which was unfortunately old and very noisy. When we asked where to wait, Ntokozo completely ignored us. Even as more people arrived, she continued to disregard us. After waiting for a while, she finally let us onto one of the trucks. However, at the last moment, she decided to move us to a different truck, which meant we lost our seats and ended up having to sit next to a bunch of equipment. This was incredibly disappointing and tainted what should have been a memorable experience. The lack of organization and respect was unacceptable, and I hope management addresses this issue so future guests don’t have to go through the same frustrating experience.

We stayed for 3 nights at the Frankel Guest House with our family. We were surprised to find that it has been beautifully renovated. The kitchen is brand new and fully equipped. The bathrooms are great with a big bathtub in each. We loved the lounge and outside living area. It has its own floodlit waterhole and we saw hyena, jackal and a variety of game from our verandah. We highly recommend it!

Satara is one of the larger rest camps in Kruger National Park (KNP). We recently spent three nights here and found this to be a great location for exploring the main and gravel roads in the area. During our stay, we had a BG2 bungalow which was sufficient for restful sleep and a bit of make-shift food preparation and braai. There is a small outdoor area with dedicated fridge and storage space for food. There was a braai grill as well but no kitchenette, plates, cups or cutlery so we needed to make those purchases in the Park Shop at Satara in order to do a braai on one of the evenings. At Satara there is the mentioned Shop with a fair selection of food and drinks and other items you might need during stays at the rest camp or if simply making midday stopover and rest break here. There is also a Cattle Baron restaurant that opens at 7am for coffee and take-away food items, also serving up a nice range of Steakhouse food items during the day. The Rest Camp also has public toilets and filling station. While being a fairly large camp, we found it noticeably less busy compared to Lower Sabie and Skakusa, which is nice if you prefer something a bit quieter but still with the restaurant and other facility conveniences during trips to KNP. Would gladly stay here again during future visits to the Park.

Busy camp in the middle of Kruger. Dead silent at night, ok food in the restaurant and huts were ok. There are no alternatives, so what can I say. Well stocked gift shop, not so much groceries. Filling station for petrol and a car wash were also available. Plenty of game all around outside the camp.
