I’m a local from San Marcos (about 30 minutes away) and stayed here on a Friday for my son’s 10th birthday. The resort is absolutely stunning, but for over $800 a night plus $65 for valet, the experience didn’t deliver. Long waits, disorganized service, and overpriced, underwhelming food took away from what should’ve been a special family celebration. ⸻ Check-In & Arrival • Arrived at noon. Valet was quick, but it took 10 minutes to find a luggage cart, another 10 to check our bags, and 10 more just to check in. • We were told our room wouldn’t be ready until 4 PM—totally fine—but even after a callback at 2 PM, it took another 15 minutes in line to get our keys. ⸻ Bell Desk Experience This was the biggest letdown. • Made 4 calls to get our luggage—each either disconnected or sent to an automated system that doesn’t work. • The “Get It Done” button? Completely useless. • Someone finally answered and said it would be 15 minutes—we waited over 50. • I had to sit in the room alone for over an hour while my family was at the pool, because “someone had to be present.” ⸻ Pool & Staff • Pool staff were friendly and fast, and food came out quickly. • Even though the pool was about 30% full, we still had to wait 10 minutes just to get in. • Over $200 for: • 3 glasses of wine • 2 Captain & Pepsis (yes—Pepsi, no Coke) • 3 chicken tenders + fries ⸻ Dinner • We tried to eat at Growlers, but gave up after being told it’d be 50+ minutes. • Headed to the buffet instead—poke bowls and the salad bar were solid, but hot food was basic at best (maybe 8 items total). • $265 for 2 adults + 2 kids, with zero kid-friendly options. • Big miss for a resort that’s clearly trying to market to families. ⸻ Morning • Nothing opens before 6:30 AM—not even coffee. • Once it did, it took 15 minutes just to get a cup. • Breakfast buffet was $170 for 2 adults + 2 kids. • Slightly better than dinner, but we got lukewarm omelets with unmelted cheese and premade pastries and breads. • Again, not worth the price. ⸻ Bottom Line The Gaylord Pacific is visually impressive, and the staff is friendly, but the resort is nowhere near operationally ready for what it charges. We spent over $1,300 for a one-night stay—checking in at noon, checking out the next morning—and felt like half our time was spent waiting in lines, calling for help, or chasing down service. The setting has huge potential, but until the operations catch up, it’s simply not worth the price.
