Den Gamle Grænsekro Inn

Checking in was weird - got handed the daily booking sheet in order for me to point out our booking - could see everyone else’s name and room number!!! Got given the key and that was it. But I had no idea of where the rooms was as it was our first (and last) time there, was shown in the right direction after asking. The room as spacious but rather dated in decor and the bathroom has definitely seen better times. Dinner was ok, but a bit strange that specialities could only be ordered for two. Breakfast was fine but we’ve had better. Overall ok but I had expected more of an old inn

"Den gamle grænsekro"/the Inn by the former Border" is a beautiful old inn, dating back from the 1600's, located few hundred meters from the earlier much disputed border between Germany and Denmark. Across from the inn is a museum dedicated to the topic. The inn, or rather manor house, is kept updated and well maintained, outside as well as inside, and the rooms are spacious, well appointed, and in beautiful colours and materials. The inn is a popular venue for weddings, conferences etc, but does also cater for individual guests. Breakfast is scrumptious with many kinds of cereals, juice, bread, ham, salmon, salami, cheese, fruit, yoghurt, marmalade etc. and service is quick and very helpful, indeed.

We arrived quite late in the evening at this hotel because of a delayed ferry boat. Upon entering we were not really welcomed, it was more of a "what do you want" from the lady in reception. We hadn't had a chance to have dinner so we were happy when we could still order something at 10 pm. We ordered an onion soup each and an ice cream dessert, along with a glass of water. The total came to an astonishing €66.- for 2 people. The onion soup barely covered the bottom of the plate. It really was a ridiculously small portion. After mentioning this you could see that the staff went all surly on us. This was extremely disappointing. On the plus side, our room was lovely with comfortable beds and a nice seating area plus a good bathroom. Nothing negative there. We would stay again but would never have another bite in the restaurant. So summarizing: Great room and beds Unfriendly staff Overcharged food and minimal portions.

Ruime kamers, de onze lagen in een aanbouw op de begane grond, handig met de bagage. De nodige slijtage is zichtbaar maar was niet storend. Badkamer en bedden waren prima. Ontbijt was matig. Diner was prima maar wel duur. Medewerkers waren niet onvriendelijk maar ook niet erg gastvrij. Erg veel vliegen in ontbijtruimte en ook wel in het restaurant.

Dit is een hotel met een verhaal. Leuk als je interesse in de Deense geschiedenis hebt. Kamers zijn prima, zeer ruim en comfortabel, goede bedden. Rustige omgeving. Prima plek om een nacht door te brengen. Restaurant is prima en ontbijt ook in orde.
