Thunderbird Lodge

Had two nights booked and pre-paid, left after one night. No one was bothered why we left early, it’s only about the money. Reception was also rude when we tried to check in earlier and price was higher than agreed in the mail ( an ‘environmental charge’). Room was worn, lights not working, filthy airconditioning that made huge noise, fan made a ticking sound that kept me awake. Pillows hard, bed uncomfortable and dirty bathroom. Cafeteria was not good, information given by employee incorrect for lunch. Dinner was better, breakfast portions are huge. Next time will stay in Chinle in a cheaper hotel from a chain ( not a lot of options). However, the 4 hour tour we took with Elton was wonderful! O.k., the car broke down, but he asked us to wait in the shade and got it fixed! Very informative tour , Canyon the Chelly is magnificent . The souvenir shop is not expensive with items ‘made in China’…. Will be back to Canyon the Chelly and use the tour from here, but not stay at the hotel or dine in the cafeteria again.

The rooms are very nice and clean. Cafeteria was not much. Elton gave us an amazing tour. We enjoyed being able to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful views and weather. I would say that there is not many choice for food, so you might want to bring snacks.

We had a long day on the road from Santa Fe via Petrified Forest and en route to Monument Valley and this was a little gem tucked away in the unprepossessing Navajo town of Chinle right next to Canyon de Chelly. The room was great, the cafeteria really good and the people charming.

On a road trip thru AZ and NM and decided to divert here for a night. It's just under 2 hours from Gallup--take the drive! There's not a lot there and that's one of the best parts. Just drive around! Tashina welcomed me and put me in their last king room. I knew one day wasn't going to cut it and I went back to the front desk. The room I was in was booked for the next day, but Tashina got me another room (double), which I was able to switch to immediately and use for 2 nights (thank you!). In the middle of this, I thought I had lost my room key. Tashina managed to handle that with grace and warmth, so I didn't feel like such an ***** when I realized it was in my hand the whole time. Rooms are quiet, clean and comfortable, with chairs and a table just outside each room. There's on-site laundry, great wifi, a gift shop and the cafeteria. The cafeteria was OK. The food was good, it's a little chaotic, but the staff are universally warm, welcoming and friendly--which brings me to Shania... Shania seems to have several jobs at the hotel, one of which is in the cafeteria. Night 2 there was a mix-up and they didn't make my dinner. Shania was bussing tables and asked me if I had gotten my dinner. When I said no, she told me the cafeteria had closed. She apologized sincerely, left my table, came back 2 minutes later, apologized again, and offered me a plate of lasagna, some sides and a piece of cake. As a restaurant manager, I was impressed by her sincerity and her commitment to taking care of guests any way she can (and did). Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Very comfortable. We stayed in room 9. If you can get that, do it. It’s a little single building with a large living area, separate bedroom. The cafeteria on the property is very basic. Bring food with you. Bring water as well since the water there can smell like sulphur. No alcohol allowed in the Navajo Nation. The sights are amazing!

This is an excellent place to stay when visiting Canyon de Chelly. It was clean and the bed was comfortable, and the temperature control in the room was good. There is a restaurant at the lodge which has typical food choices, including the tasty fry bread. It is located just outside the entrance to Canyon de Chelly. The tour we took started at this lodge and the tour was a wild ride! It was conducted by a local native american guide and the tour was absolutely excellent.

It may be the room they put us in, #10, but it was old, small, run down, poorly appointed and way out of date. They should retire it and make it a store room again. The main door deadbolt would not lock. The AC was a window unit through the wall and was noisy. The bathroom door would not shut properly and the bathroom was in major disrepair. The tub surround had major cracks in it and the sink looked like someone's kid had installed it. It had one small window over the bed and the bed pillows were rock hard. Room did not feel clean. The restaurant is cafeteria style only and is apparently run by untrained employees. Worst room I have rented in 50 years.

My husband and I spent two lovely nights in September. Our room and the restaurant food were fine and we were happy to be so close to Canyon de Chelly where we had a wonderful tour with Adam Teller and the next day really enjoyed rim travel.. I realized the evening after we departed that I had left clothing in a bureau drawer and immediately telephone the Lodge and then followed up with an email describing the items of clothing and indicating my willingness to have the return postage for the items charged to my credit card on file there. Nearly two weeks of phoning and talking with various people I gave up. Housekeeping continually reported no items found in our room and undoubtedly the clothing never made it to the housekeeping office. Perhaps my fault for not thoroughly checking drawers before departure? Disappointing.

All the staff at Thubderbird Lodge were so friendly, welcoming and helpful. As a solo traveler (f), I felt very safe, I enjoyed my room and the bed was very comfy. The rooms feature a fridge, microwave and a coffee machine. Internet was very good. The Thunderbird Cafeteria is right next door, I highly recommend the blue corn pancakes for breakfast! I also could not recommend more the guided tours of the beautiful Canyon de Chelly offered through Thunderbird Lodge. I spent the whole afternoon on the tour and I had the very best time seeing the cliff dwellings, pictorgraphs and the incredible nature of the canyon.
