The George Hotel

We spent a night here and were very pleased with The George. If you use the secure parking you need to get the code from the reception in the Bar. It was easy to use but a big car or SUV might struggle with the parking. Getting our key was easy and we were very pleased with our twin bedroom. The room itself was smallish but everything we needed was there. Nice selection of teas, coffee, biscuits and large cups. The bathroom was quite big and had shower and bath. Large soft towels and a shower mat to use in the bath was a good touch. The Wi-Fi very good and easy to get into. Great choice of breakfast dishes. We came on a Sunday and had the best roast we have had in a long time. All the staff were friendly and helpful. We would certainly go back there again.

I live within walking distance of The George Hotel and we often meet friends for drinks. However yesterday evening the bar area was very busy and the music was played very loudly. Customers were shouting to be heard above the noise and it was not a pleasant experience. Even when customers began leaving the music was very loud. We were pleased to leave as our experience was ruined by the noise preventing normal conversation.

Popped in for Saturday lunch and place busy but plenty of tables. The redecoration looks good. Nice choice of sandwiches (BLT, gougons etc) which comes with dressed salad leaves and fries (though these could've been hotter so either not warming plates or left to sit). Friendly staff. It seems to be a Wadsworth pub but my card shows charge to Wetherspoons Hotel? Bit odd as seems to small for them and not their menu. Also not a mile to walk to toilets 😂 so what's going on?

We used to love coming to the George, the food is lovely & it has a great atmosphere. However, we were shocked to see that the prices have gone up significantly, not just by a couple of pounds either. Nearly £20 for 'pub grub' fish and chips, lasagne etc is crazy. Not to mention the slightly 'posher' menu with dishes at £25-£28 each. On top of that, they now automatically charge a 10% service charge. Unfortunately we will not be returning as we do not like to be ripped off. Such a shame.

A charming typically English Inn. Warm welcome and very friendly staff. The deecor was nice, I had a small single room which was very nice. The booking engine photo does not do it justice. Underground parking was nice to have. It’s right on the centre of town. The town is quite a surprise, it’s a pretty hilly town, with a lovely cobbled narrow street area full of bars, very good restaurants - I had a very good Indian meal- , gift shops and an organic shop. Great value.

Located on Main Street so centrally located. Suggest to avoid room 7 if possible as overlooks noisy road. Room in keeping with period of the hotel. Comfy bed, small toilet/shower room. Breakfast was decent. Sausage had dried out from being cooked previously and kept hot. Polite staff at breakfast. Parking was in an enclosed car park that was tricky to enter due to manoeuvring around pillars.

Recently stated here for two days with work and made use of the Meeting Room facilities for a small group. Firstly Vicky and the team are nothing short of exceptional, I cannot fault a single thing. The level of service and personal desire to ensure everything was absolutely perfect was outstanding. Facilities were exactly what we required for our purposes, food was faultless (thankyou son of Vicky) and the location was beautiful. Whilst our stay was Business related I would happily recommend this location and hotel for tourists, I genuinely cannot think of anything that Vicky & the team could not provide or support to ensure a happy stay!

As regular customers for a number of years, we visited recently for lunch and were shocked to find prices have exploded , but as we were there, decided to stay The food and service were fine but we discovered on paying that as salt in the wound, a 10% service charge had been imposed, on top of the exploded pricing, with no suggestion, on querying it, that it was optional, contrary to a tiny note found later that it existed and was discretionary, on whose part it didn't say Amusingly, after handing us the bill, the waitress stayed sat at our table until we had paid. Apparently people have been leaving without payingI I wonder why! We are in out late 70's and 80's so not likely to be making a quick getaway

We arrived on the hottest day of the year so far and checked into a room at the front of the hotel. Within 10 minutes it became clear that we couldn't possibly stay in that room as the heat was unbearable and there wasn't even a fan. I called reception and the assistant manager, Wayne, came up immediately and we were promptly transferred to another room, with no fuss. Thank you Wayne. we both had a good night's sleep and a fabulous breakfast, mine was a delicious vegan Excellent value, and as we often visit friends in the area, will definitely stay again.
