This is a complicated review, lots of really good with pockets of shortcomings given price point and blackberry management. First the good. We were in a deluxe king at the inn, was roomy and very comfortable. Friends in one of the cottage rooms found their room more basic and much smaller, would recommend splurging for the deluxe king, incremental price is not much for the extra space. Housekeeping did a good job each day. On property hikes exceeded expectations, with something for all abilities. We loved the more challenging hikes to awesome views but they were not easy. Breakfast service (and quality) was at a very high standard, quick and attentive service. We also had croquet lesson, instructor was very engaging and very good. And just about all of the staff was engaging and very friendly. Had lunch in halstead house which was also good as was the service. Now a few shortcomings, Bar and dinner service in main restaurant was very slow and disorganized. Drinks at bar were good, but took over 20 minutes to get them after we ordered. At dinner, we had brought two bottles of red wine (we ordered a white off the menu) and server asked us who wanted which one of the reds so the sommelier would know when he poured them. We found this odd, and found it odder when after 15 minutes the sommelier arrived and got more of them wrong than right. Would have been much quicker (and accurate) for him to simply go around the table with each bottle and ask each person what they wanted. So a process and communication issue there. Had similar experience with concierge, we left message at front desk after hours with a request, we went back to front desk noon the next day to ask if concierge had responded, front desk checked and said they could see email went to concierge previous night but no response yet which front desk clearly found odd but could not resolve for an hour or two more. Finally, some of our group who stayed in Mayapple requested fire place to be prepared two nights, when they returned from dinner, it was not prepared either night so that was disappointing. So while more space was devoted to shortcomings, I still gave 4 stars as the property itself is outstanding and well maintained, and friends who live in the area say that staffing can be a challenge everywhere once you get later in the season so some of the glitches we experienced may have been isolated. High Hampton is perfect location for on and off property hikes, and if they can improve some of their service inconsistencies to Blackberry standards, could highly recommend.
