Lots of old school style and charm in the hotel's public places. No wonder there was a film crew and production unit shooting a tv drama for several of the days I stayed. The rooms themselves are a little in need of attention, though. I had two, because they showed me into a horrible little interior one at first, before providing me with my allotted classic double room, which was much bigger, brighter and outward facing. But still a little dilapidated. The rooftop terrace for dining was nice. At breakfast, choose the Egyptian rather than the Continental, as you will receive a much more filling and tasty selection.

We popped in for a beer and loved the old school vibe. Felt very 1950s! The team were polite and friendly. The lift was an experience and the beers reasonably priced. The decor was very retro. A place with history! The sunset from the roof bar was awesome! Definitely worth a visit.

I liked this hotel. It is very retro and worn down with a nostalgic feel - but in terms of the money you pay, it’s simple enough and fit for purpose. The staff are all very friendly and courteous and the rooftop bar is great for a sundowner. The Koshary restaurant Abo Tarek is close by which is excellent - tasty meal and very cheap. I rated down a star because it was very noisy (i stayed here twice) mostly from the street. It’s a market area so very busy outside. And, I also had a negative breakfast experience. I had a tour at 7.30am, so went to breakfast at 7am and ordered. A few other people came in shortly after. I sat there for 25mins with nothing. Some of the later people were getting served breakfast. In the end, I ran out of time and walked out. It’s a very simple breakfast, so there is absolutely no reason why it should take so long. Lots of guests have early tours so they should be ready to start serving, when breakfast starts.

This is a hugely quirky hotel. It’s old and has a charm peculiar to it. The room was clean and the staff were really helpful and polite. I chose downtown Cairo because I wanted to be in the middle of the hustle and bustle. The Carlton ticked that box and when it gets a bit much after a long day then the rooftop bar was a great refuge where you could get a meal or a cold beer. The menu is limited and the prices out dated. This needs updating. It’s not really a family hotel if you have young kids, the elevators have no protecting door as you travel so the walls are moving right in front of you plus the roof bar has some plants in a planter and then it’s an eight storey drop. You can hear everything outside and there’s some kind of auto part market and someone down there is selling novelty car horns so expect to hear the General Lee clad on going off up until about 10 pm. You can’t come to a city as densely populated as Cairo and not expect to hear noise, see rubbish and nearly get run over. I loved it, it was exactly what I wanted and I absolutely recommend this place but not to families. I would come here again. The breakfast was great and yeah the locks are quirky but that’s part of the charm.

Extremely comfortable and stylish hotel with 1930s charm Great downtown location for walking through the city. Clean and well equipped rooms and WiFi throughout, including in bedrooms! Comfortable beds and excellent lighting. Friendly and charming staff. Roof top terrace with bar. Good Egyptian breakfast. Good value and highly recommended. I look forward to returning.

This is truly a historical hotel that has preserved its beautiful atmosphere since 1935. The building, rooms and elevator may be a bit rickety, but his only adds to the atmosphere. Apart from the beautiful decorations (including historical photographs on every floor!) the roofgarden terrace is its biggest asset, with wonderful views of Cairo and a great place to enjoy a delicious Egyptian breakfast in the sun and drinks/dinner in a hip ambiance with great music in evenings.

Rooftop bar! I did not stay at the hotel. We enjoyed a fabulous food tour (Bellies on route) and we ended the tour here. Stunning view and they serve Shisha and alcohol. Not much shade, so I would suggest going late afternoon/evening and the city view at night is stunning.

Hotel with a character, I liked the old fashioned vibe it feels like you are traveling back in time. It’s a good place to stay a night or two to get the city vibe. Surroundings are not touristic at all and very hectic, but that’s part of the experience. We have used Uber to get around and went out in the evening for a meal. There are some good coffee places in the area. The main negative is a cigarette smell, it’s not very strong in the room but you definitely feel it in the corridors. Stuff is friendly and always trying to help, there is no hair dryer in the room but I was provided with one after I asked. They also have a nice terrace upstairs.

We didn’t stay here, but visit a few time during our stay in Cairo. It’s a central place and the rooftop offers a lovely space and oasis of calm in the hustle and bustle of Cairo. 150 Egyptian pounds for a nice draft beer, albeit served in a paper cup. Nice snacks. The staff were very attentive and helpful. If you are looking for a calm tie out and view if the centre, we would highly recommend.
