Widbrook Grange

I'll begin with the positive. The food was great, presented nicely and hot although the menu doesn't change daily. Now, to the not so good. We were in the Artist room, (room 6) which is advertised as a superior double. Sadly this is far from superior. Apart from the bed being comfortable with good quality bedding, that is the only positive we can find. Where to start.... wardrobe: impossible to hang anything due to the nature of the hanger/rail arrangement. No drawer space for clothes so for the time we were there we had to leave our clothes in the case. There is a desk/dressing table which had 2 small drawers which my husband put his medication in only for it to drop straight through. I sat to dry my hair using the mirror above and I could only see the top of my head. The carpet is not clean and there was no heating despite being told that the heating would be on at 6pm. The windows are all cloudy so can't see out. Now to the bathroom: no blind to the window, so we resorted to putting a towel up. No grab rail for the shower and nowhere to put toiletries while in the shower other than the floor which is not ideal.

Generally we enjoyed our stay which was for my wife’s birthday. The Seamstress’ Room was atmospheric and we loved the roll top bath and comfortable four poster bed. Dinner was fine, although we were ignored by the waiter for at least ten minutes before being attended to. An American couple who were also being ignored got up and left! A couple who appeared to be regulars managed to get their orders in as soon as they were shown to their table so were served much quicker than anyone else which was annoying. Waiters should be trained to acknowledge diners and several drinks much quicker rather than ignoring them! My wife’s crab ravioli starter was very disappointing as it had precious little crab in it. My scallops were excellent. Our mains (lemon chicken and beef fillet) were very good. After-dinner cocktails were good. Breakfast was good but no-one had serviettes so us guests had to find them in a side cabinet ourselves - again, evidence that the young waiters are poorly trained. On checking out our invoice was not itemised so we just had to trust that we hadn’t been over-charged for food and drinks. Again I feel that an itemised bill should be essential. Shame that these easily rectifiable details took the edge off our stay!

Just back from a lovely 2 night stay at Widbrook Grange. We stayed in the ‘ Piggery’ wing of the hotel. The room was nice and bright and tastefully decorated with quirky items in keeping with other areas of the hotel. The food was excellent, staff were friendly and efficient and went above and beyond to help make our stay enjoyable. The swimming pool and gym were an added bonus. Would definitely stay again.

Well what a disappointment, the whole places is shabby ,weeds & rubbish everywhere!! And the food is diabolical,ordered Butternut squash pithiviers and obviously the chef had never heard of thus as I received a shortcrust pie containing ratatouille and a few undercooked asparagus, my husband ordered lemon thyme chicken which we expected to come with some nice vegetables but no just a very poor salad like you'd get fra supermarket and strangely a slice of palma ham ! The farmhouse was very dark in the communimal rooms with lots of paraphernalia everywhere.

I booked a night away via Secret Escapes for my partner's birthday which included a cream tea and a Super Deluxe double room. When we arrived we were promptly shown to our room which at first seemed lovely (although not quite as luxurious as the pictures online!). Unfortunately however, the toilet in our room did not flush. We spoke to the man on reception who came up and checked it but then informed us that they had no maintenance team onsite and that we would have to use the communal toilet downstairs. I asked if we could change rooms but we were told they were fully booked but that someone would look at it tomorrow. I explained that was disappointing as we were only there for one night, to which the staff member replied "oh that's unfortunate". There was no apology. We went for dinner in the restaurant and ordered a bottle of sparkling water. We were brought a bottle of still water, we explained to the waitress that we had ordered a bottle of sparkling and this was still and she replied "oh the sparkling ones are usually blue". Again no apology for the mix up. The mains in the restaurant are delicious and rival some high-end restaurants we have been to in London but the desserts really let them down. My partner ordered the passionfruit and vanilla creme and it came as a solid block and tasted only of gelatine. Breakfast and the cream tea were nice but average. Upon leaving, we did have an apology from the lady on reception and they gave us £25 off for the broken toilet. But having spent around £380 for the stay and dinner this felt a little insulting. To round it off we realised we had been overcharged for our meal and cocktails! I have not contacted them about it as I have found the whole experience very unhelpful. Two "stars" as the hotel itself is quite nice.

This is a lovely rustic B&B with large rooms. The beds are huge and very comfy. Staff really friendly. Breakfast was fantastic. The shower head was broken in the room and the bathroom didn’t feel 100% clean. Good base point for exploring local area. Very quiet location.
