I’m fortunate to be able to travel to Iceland twice in a short period, and Basalt Hotel is the only place outside of Reykjavik we returned to on the second trip. Location: Nestled in a valley about 30 minutes east of Borgarnes, the drive features stunning landscapes and quaint sheep and horse farms, not to mention the mountains, rivers, and small waterfalls you can see from the road. The last few KM to the hotel are on a well-kept unpaved road. Facilities: Basalt is split into two halves, the guest rooms and the common area with restaurant, connected by an enclosed breezeway. It was all built in the last 5-10 years, with some ongoing projects evident (excited to see how the property evolves). There’s only about a dozen guest rooms, so even at the busiest of times, it is never crowded. The restaurant area features a panoramic view of the valley. They have an outdoor hot spring-fed hot tub with the same view, and they provide sandals and robes as needed. The rooms are modest yet well furnished and comfortable. Restaurant: A small menu with appealing options for all- red meat, fish, and vegetarian options, all lovingly prepared and delicious. Breakfast is tasty, fresh, and buffet style. Staff: Icelandic hospitality at its finest. The hotel is run by one family with some seasonal help. You will want for nothing if it’s in their ability to provide it. They are the real reason we’ve returned, and hope to return again. It feels like home away from home.
