The Whittling House

The reviews I read previously were more or less accurate. The room was small and very difficult due to having to navigate three steps from the bed to the toilet. There was a terrible smell in the room which we thought were the drains. I developed an allergic reaction and couldn't stop sneezing for days after. I suspect this was caused by cleaning products used to disguise the awful smell. On the first evening I ordered monkfish which I was unable to eat. It smelt very strong and was under cooked. I've never returned food before but had to confess that I couldn't eat it when asked how the meal was. I was offered another meal of fish and chips but was told very sternly and loudly that I would have to pay for both meals. In the end we weren't charged for the meal, but at the time I felt very embarrassed by the whole incident. I have eaten monkfish twice since without an issue. Parking was difficult but we were there during an arts festival.

I have tried all day to book DB&B at this hotel. I have been misled by several people, let down by their website and eventually stonewalled by their General Manager. She wanted an extra 50 pounds over the price they quoted three hours earlier. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.

This was a second visit to the restaurant and was very disappointing, we had no dogs but were surrounded by them! We were not offered a seat in another area, it was obviously chosen by the waitress for her convenience as it was in a "corridor" part of the dining area on the way to the kitchen. Two courses, starter and mains were delivered at the same time. We thought that the food and service was average and wines over priced.

Excellent food....we had lamb roast and my nephew from London said it was up there with the best London retaurants....only complaint was DOGS...why do people bring thier dogs into an eating area, they alway thinks everyone is in love with thier smelly pooch

Lovely setting, great food and super helpful staff that could not do enough…room very spotless and beautifully decorated. Booked for a family birthday and staff were great at looking after us….would highly recommend for couples family. Food was amazing and great portion sizes.

Excellent room with everything you need available and sea views over the rooftops. Staff really friendly and helpful throughout the stay and food all freshly cooked and very tasty and well presented. Alnmouth itself is a great little town with a few shops, amazing beaches and 2 golf courses.
