This is not an exaggeration or an over statement. It is a fact. I have travelled extensively. I have stayed in 5-star hotels, in hostels, in convents, in Airbnbs, in simple small-town hotels, in resorts, in middle of the road hotels. I have travelled in the US, in Russia, in Brazil, in most of Europe. And I am reviewing the Marriott as the expectations one has when paying $200 a night in the capital of NY State. It was indeed the worst hotel stay I have ever had. My husband and I have stayed in this hotel several times before. We have family in town and the rooms are large and it used to be a good hotel. Now it is dirty and not adequately staffed. We were given a room that stunk of cigarette smoke and animal dander. The place now is set up for long stays and people stay with large dogs, sometimes more than one animal, and sometimes they bark at night. They don’t have maid service everyday anymore. We were told that there is a “refresh” after a couple of days. That meant that an overworked hotel maid came to our room one day and change the towels. In her haste one of the dirty wet towels was left at the middle of the floor to greet us when we came back at the end of the day. The room smelled so bad that we had to buy aromatic candles to relieve the odor. I also bought lavender sachets to put on top of the pillows to help us with the odor to be able to sleep at night. If you want to admit animals you have to clean your rooms every day. There were adhesive tape marks around the smoke detectors; I wonder if previous guests blocked the detectors to be able to smoke in the room, hence the terrible smell of cigarette smoke. I travel with a thin blanket to do stretching. It was not possible to lay it on the floor to do so as the smell on the carpet was overbearing. I used the blanket to cover the couch as the upholstery was grimy and smelled like a dog bed. I got insect bites on my shoulders which I pray to not be beg bugs. I will see my dermatologist this week. The common areas of the building had a lot of trash accumulated. Our room was not in the main building and the entrance to that building had an overflown trash can. We asked it to be emptied so we didn’t have to jump over the trash to enter the building. It didn’t happen so my husband took the trash bags to the main building. It got a bit better after that. But still, they don’t have enough staff to keep the place clean. The breakfast crew and the reception desk staff were very nice, and the manager was apologetic and gave us a discount of 50% for one day, as they were supposed to clean the room that day and they didn’t. But my sense for their answers to the problem is that they have faced the same complaints before. We stayed for four nights. And I have never been so happy to leave a hotel. We paid almost $1,000 for a hotel that shouldn’t be charging half of that.
