Trip x

We last stayed at Adare Manor two years ago and had such a wonderful experience that I left a glowing five-star review. Sadly, this time, I feel I’m being generous in awarding three stars. While there were still some positive aspects, the overall experience fell far short of expectations. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted, and the check-in process was efficient and friendly. As we had a booking for afternoon tea, we headed straight to the Gallery Room. While the tea itself was pleasant, the presentation was marred by chipped cups and saucers—my cup alone had four chips. It felt like a lack of attention to detail, which was disappointing. After tea, we enjoyed a walk around the beautiful grounds, which remain a highlight. We then received a call that our room was ready. The room was well-presented but showed slight signs of wear, with scuff marks on the skirting boards and areas in need of a fresh coat of paint. The river view we had looked forward to was also spoiled by the presence of three diggers, which was far from the serene scene we expected. Dinner at the Carriage House was a mixed experience. The food was good, but the seating arrangements were baffling. We watched a couple being seated at a table so far apart that it’s beyond us who thought it was okay. The couple looked incredulous, and the woman even leaned back to take a photo to capture the absurd distance before requesting to be moved. It was an odd moment that highlighted a lack of thoughtfulness in the dining setup. We recalled our previous New Year’s visit, where live music added to the atmosphere, but this time, there was none in the bar. When we inquired about entertainment for Saturday night, we were told there would be nothing—just a playlist in the Tack Room. It felt like the energy we remembered from our first stay was missing. The following morning, we found the automated curtains in our room wouldn't open, leaving us to get ready in the dark. When we called reception to say they weren’t working they informed us we could pull them manually (which we had tried but there was resistance so we didn’t want to force them). Additionally, I noticed peeling wallpaper in the hallway for the duration of our stay, a detail that summed up our stay—a clear indication that attention to maintenance was lacking. It would appear to me that preparations for the 2027 Ryder Cup have caused a shift in focus, with current guests suffering the consequences. From chipped crockery to tired hallways and a musty smell near the Tack Room and spa, it felt like essential repairs are being postponed. Breakfast was enjoyable, but we returned to our room to find cleaning products left behind. While mistakes happen, it felt careless and cheapened the experience. I returned the multi surface spray to reception. Lunch ordered to the room was nice, and dinner at the Carriage House that evening was also good, though the waitress mistakenly addressed us as “Mr. and Mrs.” (we are two men)
