Overall the experience was average. For the same price at other hotels I've been to, the service, room quality would have been much better.
The facilities are generally aged. The room was old a bit dusty and some parts of the tatami floor had sunken in. Service was pleasant.
Few important things to note:
- poor ventilation at meal times meany the whole hotel and your room would smell like meat.
- shuttle service only for to and from the bus station. (Most other hotels provide shuttles to the ski lifts)
- the ski lifts are about 10-15mins walk away with full gear on (boards, etc)
The room is spacious and in traditional Japanese style. Was expecting a private onsen in the room but it was only a bathtub. The staff couldn’t communicate well in English which caused some misunderstanding during our stay but they’re friendly and responsible enough to solve the problem for us so it’s still a great experience overall. The breakfast was very traditional and got more and more abundant every day. We had a great 4nights stay in Hayamakan.
The highlight has to be the nearby restaurants. The hotel will give you some recommendations nearby, please make sure you try some of them!
The hotel has pick up and return service from The Zao onsen bus terminal. The hotel had onsen indoor and outdoor which is perfect. The location is just 5mins Walk to the Zao chuo rope way. It is a perfect hotel if you are heading to the zao mountain to ski. Outside the hotel 5 mins Walk to Lawson. Opp the hotel, 5mins Walk is also a small kiosk selling super Nice ice cream. The hotel Breakfast and dinner are also pretty decent. Stayed for 2 nights, they prepared 2 different meals.
The hotel is beautifully decorated in Japanese style. There is stunning scenery outside the window of our room. The dinner is surprisingly good with excellent service, well decorated dishes of tasty food. Definitely will stay here again in next visit to North East Japan.
藏nice Onsen ,nearby walking to zqo repeway ,food restaurants,
Friendly staff ,even we dont know japanesse but they very good translated and try to let us understand the way.
7free Onsen by the hotel just take bucket go enjoy ,own hotel Oso have.nice view from room snowing comfortable
We were going to Zao Onsen for skiing, but the onsen town was fully booked out. Searching a little farther, we found Tsukinoike offering rooms and Kaiseki dinner + breakfast for a reasonable price, and that's how we decided our booking. To our surprise, the images of the hotel is accurate, as the hotel was newly renovated. There's design elements and details at every corner, and our stay was perfectly pleasant. It's only a 30 min drive from Zao Onsen, making the commute fairly reasonable. Lastly, the food was absolutely worth the price, as the chef creatively used local ingredients to make delicious Kaiseki dinner. We stayed for two nights, and the food did not repeat. Tsukinoike has been an unexpected gem during our trip.
We had an amazing ryokan stay at Takamiya with its rich history and culture. Our room was on the highest floor, which gave us beautiful views of the town. The food prepared was delicious and the staff were welcoming and helpful.
The ryokan is located on top of a flight of stairs, and there are only stairs within the complex, so those with mobility issues would face difficulties. The staff will help out with your luggages during check-in and check-out though, and all amenities are provided for!

UUsuario invitadoWhat a gem of a place! The special thing about this place is that there are 5 private outdoor onsens as well as a gender-segregated public bath and one mixed gender outdoor bath (for this one, you need to wear a bathing suit). If you are shy of exposing yourself or like taking photos, then those 5 private outdoor onsens are just perfect. I went in the autumn, which is cooling already and I can imagine what a treat it will be in winter with all the snow.
The hotel is located almost to the top of the hill. Either drive or call them ahead and they will pick you up and drop you off in the vicinity.
My room is quaint and Japanese-styled. I didn't pay for the meal package as I knew I'd would be busy trying out all the onsens available. They are all open 24hrs. By the way, private onsen number 1 and 5 are the best and most picturesque!!!
I'm doing all a favor and posting all the pictures of the private onsens.

UUsuario invitadoThe trip was planned few weeks ahead, accommodation options in Zao Onsen are scarce. If there were other options, I probably would not go with this hotel again.
- Before arrival, I called the hotel twice using trip.com but no one answered.
- There was only one front desk staff handling check-in. I have waited for 20 minutes for check-in and the Indian family has it waited for 35 minutes. There was another staff coming out from the office and acknowledged the queue. However no action was taken despite the long wait by guest.
- I inquired about shuttle bus service but the staff at the entrance said “No shuttle bus”. I saw shuttle bus having the hotel name around the Zao Onsen area.
- On the first day of room cleaning, the cleaning lady has not replaced the used porcelain cup and Japanese cup. Also no replenishment on tea bags and toilet amenities. At this price point of over USD500 per night, I was quite surprised.
- There are 2 onsen places, one outside the hotel and one on the 1F. The outdoor onsen inside the hotel was not opened and the reason is “snow accumulation”.
Overall, the room is spacious and clean but the service did not meet the expectations.
UUsuario invitadoGood location, clean and nice peaceful hotel. Connected with S mall and has bus station outside. Close to Tsuruoka station by foot. The onsen or hot bath was okay, bit outdated. The outside hot bath was closed and dry sauna was warm. Breakfast waa good.
UUsuario invitadoNot as clean as I've come to expect of japanese properties. For some reason, the cleaning lady/man left some black rubber debris on the floor which looked sus and I ended up cleaning after them 😑 The onsen is small and old, but tolerable due to its sufficient heat. Breakfast is good but it ends up taking up precise (and critical) time because breakfast starts at 730, and by the time I got to the ropeway station (at 810) the queue is already super long and I waited three hours before boarding the cable car. Only one staff (mixed race?) speaks English and he doesn't look particularly friendly like other Japanese staff, but I suppose he's helpful enough to Western standards.
UUsuario invitadoA wonderful place to stay in. The service was fantastic. The room was huge, much too large for just a solo traveler like me but it would have been perfect if I had brought my wife and child along. The onsen quality was great, albeit the fittings at the shower area were a bit old. The food was hands down amazing and featured great local produce. Honestly there was too much for one person to finish! What I especially liked was that they had a separate room on the first floor where if it was too early for you to check in, you could drop your luggage off, change, and then grab your gear and head to the slopes. Same thing if you intend to charge the slopes a bit more on your last day, just leave your stuff in the storage room, hit the slopes, come back and change out, hit the onsen for the last time, then go off. Definitely recommending this place to my friends visiting Zao.
