The hotel is nestled in the mountains, and the morning views from our rooms were absolutely breathtaking. On a few mornings with light drizzle, a mist swirled around the mountains, making it feel like we were living among the clouds. There was just one minor issue: the hotel initially wanted to charge 300 yen per person per day simply because it offers a public bath. As I’m not comfortable using such facilities, I didn’t visit the bath at all. However, at checkout, I was surprised to see an additional charge of over 1,000 yen for my family on the invoice. Although the amount was small, it didn’t seem fair to be charged for a facility we didn’t use. After I raised this concern, the front desk manager stepped in and kindly waived the fee. Aside from this slight issue, my stay was wonderful and thoroughly enjoyable.

Hotel staff service was top tier. Check-in counter staff allowed me to use their telephone for local call when I needed it urgently and even asked if I would be okay with Japanese and offered to help me call. Felt really relieved that help was provided without me asking and it was really touching. Check in counter staff were also sincere with their service and had wide smiles on their faces. The room was quite old but clean, quite contrasting to the modern lobby they had. Breakfast was amazing, so much choices (from smoothies to a katsu station) and delicious. Would recommend if you have the time in the morning.

Staying at Shoho in Matsumoto was an unforgettable experience that truly deserves five stars. Nestled amidst the serene landscapes of Nagano Prefecture, this hotel seamlessly blends traditional Japanese elegance with modern luxury. From the moment we stepped into the lobby, we were enveloped by a warm and inviting ambiance that set the tone for the rest of our stay. Our room was a perfect sanctuary—spacious, meticulously clean, and adorned with subtle touches of Japanese artistry. The panoramic views of the Japanese Alps from our window were nothing short of breathtaking, especially when the mountains were bathed in the soft glow of sunrise. The traditional tatami flooring and comfortable futon bedding provided an authentic experience without sacrificing comfort. One of the standout features of Shoho is its exceptional onsen facilities. Soaking in the natural hot springs while gazing at the picturesque scenery was incredibly rejuvenating. The rotenburo (outdoor bath) offered a tranquil escape where the stresses of daily life simply melted away. The hotel's attention to detail extended to these spaces, with beautifully crafted woodwork and stone elements enhancing the overall atmosphere. Culinary delights awaited us at every meal. The kaiseki dinner was a masterpiece—a multi-course feast that highlighted seasonal and local ingredients. Each dish was artfully presented and demonstrated a profound respect for Japanese culinary traditions. The breakfast buffet was equally impressive, offering a wide array of both Japanese and Western options to suit all palates. The staff at Shoho went above and beyond to ensure our stay was exceptional. Their genuine hospitality was evident in every interaction, from assisting with our luggage to offering insightful recommendations on local attractions. Despite any language barriers, their kindness and professionalism shone through. The hotel's location is ideal for exploring the rich cultural heritage of Matsumoto. We were just a short drive from the iconic Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's most beautiful original castles. Strolling through the historic Nakamachi Street with its classic white-walled storehouses turned boutique shops and cafes was a delightful way to spend an afternoon. In addition to its proximity to cultural sites, Shoho serves as a great base for nature enthusiasts. The nearby Kamikochi Valley offers stunning hiking trails that showcase the unspoiled beauty of the Japanese Alps. Returning to the comfort of the hotel after a day of exploration was something we looked forward to, especially knowing a soothing onsen soak awaited us. In summary, Shoho encapsulates the essence of Japanese hospitality. Every aspect of our stay was thoughtfully curated to provide comfort, relaxation, and cultural enrichment. We left feeling deeply refreshed and with a greater appreciation for the wonders of Matsumoto. Shoho is more than just a place to stay—it's an experience that lingers long after you've departed. We wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking an authentic and luxurious retreat in Japan.

I initially planned to book a two-night stay but was hesitant due to mixed reviews about the hotel. Instead, I opted to book for one night to see if it met my expectations, intending to decide later whether to extend my stay. After dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, I made up my mind and chose to extend for an additional night. The reception staff spoke good English, making the check-in process smooth. The set dinner and breakfast were delicious, with the restaurant staff being polite and attentive. I must commend the chef for the effort in creating varied menus for both dinner and breakfast each day of our stay. The onsen was quiet and peaceful during my visit around 5 PM. The room was spacious, and the bed was comfortable; however, the lighting was too dim for my preference. The only downside of my stay was the weak Wi-Fi signal, not just in the room but throughout most areas of the hotel.

UUsuario invitadoWe recently stayed at this newly opened hotel, which, although located quite a distance from the city, exceeded our expectations in every way. Being part of a well-known hotel chain, we were confident in the level of quality, and we’re happy to say it lived up to its reputation. One of the highlights of our stay was the onsen. It was incredibly clean, well-maintained, and provided the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted warmly with a welcome drink, which was a thoughtful and refreshing start to our stay. For families with children, this hotel goes above and beyond. There were fun and engaging activities available specifically for kids, with small prizes offered to keep them excited and entertained. This thoughtful touch really helped our children stay engaged throughout the stay, and gave us some time to relax as well. Even though the hotel is not located in the Hakuba area itself, it’s just a manageable drive away. We chose to stay here because the price was comparable to hotels in Hakuba, but with added amenities and a quieter environment. It turned out to be a great decision — we got the best of both worlds: a comfortable stay and access to skiing. We booked two rooms and requested adjoining ones with a connecting door. The hotel was able to accommodate this perfectly, which made it so much easier for our family to stay together while still having enough space. The breakfast, while somewhat limited in variety, featured fresh and high-quality local ingredients. The flavors were delicate yet satisfying, and it was clear the kitchen took pride in highlighting local produce. Service was another strong point of our stay. Every staff member we interacted with was kind, attentive, and genuinely eager to help. From check-in to check-out, their warm hospitality stood out. The hotel also offers ample parking, which is always a plus when traveling by car. Near the onsen area, there were vending machines for drinks and ice, as well as coin-operated washing machines. There were only three washers, which could have been an issue, but the staff managed it thoughtfully — when previous guests didn’t return promptly to pick up their laundry, the staff carefully placed their clean clothes in bags and stored them at the front desk to free up machines for others. That kind of proactive service really impressed us. Overall, this hotel provided a peaceful and convenient base for our winter trip. With clean facilities, thoughtful amenities, family-friendly features, and excellent service, we wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again. Highly recommended for families or anyone looking to relax in comfort while being just a short drive away from Hakuba’s ski resorts.

QQuingg📍 Hotel Keigetsu 信州昼神温泉郷 日長庵 桂月 @ Hirugami Onsen, Nagano 🇯🇵 We stayed 3D2N from 13 November 2025 at Hotel Keigetsu (日長庵 桂月), and it turned out to be one of the best choices for our Nakasendo trip. The ryokan sits in a peaceful corner of Hirugami Onsen, surrounded by nature and traditional Japanese charm. There is a designated parking area exclusively for guests, accommodating around 15-20 cars of all sizes, making it very convenient for self-drive travellers. We chose a Japanese-style room with a private bathroom, and the highlight was the beautiful wooden bathtub — perfect for a relaxing soak in complete privacy. In the mornings, the view from our room was calm and peaceful, with gentle bird chirping adding to the serene atmosphere. Our stay included breakfast and dinner, and both meals were exceptional. Each dish was beautifully prepared using seasonal ingredients, and the servers were patient and friendly, taking time to explain each course and share stories about local flavours. Their warm hospitality truly enhanced the dining experience. The ryokan is within walking distance to the Morning Market, just about 10 minutes away, making it an enjoyable little morning stroll. There is also a FamilyMart right beside the ryokan, just a short walk away — extremely convenient for drinks, snacks, or last-minute essentials during your stay. The staff also introduced several nearby activities and hiking trails, and the routes are super visitor-friendly, making this ryokan an ideal base for exploring the Nakasendo area. The onsen baths were another highlight — soothing, clean, and filled with Hirugami’s famously smooth, skin-friendly hot spring water. Perfect for unwinding every evening. Overall, Hotel Keigetsu offers excellent food, warm service, relaxing onsen, comfortable rooms, and unbeatable convenience, whether you’re here for onsen relaxation or the Nakasendo trail. Highly recommended for a peaceful, authentic, and memorable ryokan stay in Nagano. ♨️🍁🌿✨

HHanaLocation is great, it is just on the main road and by the lake. I remember there was a Lawon convenient store not far away when we drove past. We stayed there for 1 night. I highly doubt if we were given the wrong room type, as I booked a room that can see the full Suwa Lake, but the room we have got is at the corner. It is because of the cherry blossom season, there are so many mosquitos outside so we couldn't open any window. According to the information provided by the hotel, the mosquitos don't bite human, but create stains on clothings. Anyway, the room has a private onsen. It was quite small, and look a bit old. The water is very hot, though I couldn't smell any sulfur so it is not a real hot spring. As the windows can't be opened, so it is a quite stuffy inside the bathroom. The room has equipped with all amenities, but no bottled water. The hotel mentioned the water is drinkable from the tab. The room is quite clean and spacious. The mattress is quite nice, it was good for taking a rest after a whole day trip. We chose the meal package (breakfast and dinner). They were both Japanese style with a lot of dishes and options. Food is great. Nagano is not a place that produces meat, so mainly there are a lot of vegetables. With the price we paid for, the hotel services, food and everything is quite reasonable. However, the hotel is a bit old. Nothing is special other than providing a clean room to sleep.

UUsuario invitadoLove this hotel. The key ingredient: the staff, so very friendly and polite. Especially Uda at the front desk, she was always cheerful, attentive, and went out of her way many times to see to our needs. She is the perfect representative of everything friendly and positive about this resort experience. This was our first ski trip to Japan and the amenities are such a pleasant surprise. The hotel has its own ski rental, lift tickets sold right outside the door, 2 different restaurants, and its own onsen. Which was a new and lovely experience for me. The hotel is a bit older, and the bathroom is small for western standards, but the bidet more than made up for that ( love it ) and the onsen took care of the daily bathing ritual ( for me ). Heater worked well as well as the wi-fi throughout the hotel. The restaurants were a nice convenience, we paid extra for breakfast and dinner vouchers, and it was fun wearing our provided yukatas ( robes ) all day in the hotel ( not required ). The ski runs are well marked, and the ski lodges had delicious Japanese fare that blew our minds. And the Madapow! ( Madarao powder ) generously snowed down on us. Overall, would highly recommend Madarao Kogen Hotel. Again, arigato gozaimasu to Uda and the entire hotel staff that made our 3 day stay so very lovely and relaxing. Would definitely stay here again in the future. Fred Ermac, Jan 2025

UUsuario invitadoStayed at the annex wing tatami style. Rooms are reasonably big and in clean and pristine condition. Our package came with half board and the breakfast and dinner buffet were wide spread and delicious with both continental and Japanese dishes. Soba noodles were served between 9.30 to 11pm. At the lobby, there was a 24 hour snacks counter with unlimited flow of wine, beer, coffee/tea and cookies. The outdoor onsen was good too.

OO.K. MACSince it was cheaper than other ryokans in the area, I didn’t expect much. But to my surprise, it offered full service—just like the more expensive ryokans I’ve stayed at before! They even provided a pickup service from the train station, which I forgot to book. Luckily, a Western couple sitting next to me on the train had reserved it. When I saw the “Hotel Housei” sign on the van outside the station, I hopped in! The hotel is a bit far from the station and involves walking up and down hills, so carrying luggage all the way would have been quite tough. I was really fortunate to catch that ride! Cherry blossoms were in full bloom along the river, just a few steps from the hotel—such a beautiful sight. The room wasn’t large, but it had enough space and was very comfortable. The elderly gentleman at the front desk seemed to speak multiple languages—he even knew some Thai! He was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The onsen was wonderful. The indoor bath was a bit too hot for me, but the outdoor bath was cooler and more relaxing. Breakfast was a buffet, which was decent. In conclusion, this place was absolutely worth it. Next time, if I go skiing in Shiga Kogen or bring someone to see the snow monkeys, I’ll definitely remember to book the pick-up and drop-off service in advance!
