The Smile Hotel Premium Hakodate Goryokaku is a typical Japanese business hotel, so although the photos of the rooms may look as though the rooms are reasonably spacious, in reality it’s just a typical business hotel, with minimal space. While this should not be a big issue for many guests, if you’ve not experienced it before, be ready for a rather space limited experience. Having said that, the room was quite clean and apart from some scuff marks on the walls, it presented quite well. It’s also important to note, that since it’s a business hotel the bathroom is quite small, with the bathroom wash basin protruding into the bath tub & shower area and the toilet was clearly designed for significantly smaller users. Apart from changing towels, providing new slippers and replenishing coffee & tea supplies, there was no servicing of my room over the duration of my 3-night stay. This is all normal, so be ready for it.
The biggest annoyance was that there was no air conditioning available during the period I stayed. This is hotel policy at this time of the year, and the management clearly think that guests have no right to control the temperature, and therefore enjoy some level of comfort in their room. Because of this, on my first night the room temperature was approximately 25°c (although I couldn’t turn the air conditioning on, the control unit displayed the actual room temperature), which when combined with the fact that the bed has an arctic standard duvet (or futon - whatever you want to call it), the temperature of the room was NOT conducive to restful sleep. When I enquired about this the next morning, the front desk clerk bluntly said “open the window”, which of course I had tried to do during the night, but for some reason the handle to open and close the window had been removed, making it impossible to open the window. The clerk kindly offered to go to my room and open the window (presumably using a special tool) once I had left the room for the day, which he did. The difference in room temperature was quite noticeable when I returned that the evening, but why this policy in the first place, and the belligerence and attitude of management about guest comfort is beyond me.
The other issue was the WiFi, which was patchy and unreliable on my floor. The only way I could connect any of my devices (2 phones & 1 tablet), was to go to the lobby, connect and then return to my room. Once a connection had been established, I was able to reconnect whenever I returned to my room, however the strength of the WiFi signal varied considerably when making calls using various apps (e.g., WhatsApp, Line and FB Messenger) and therefore the call stability was unreliable with calls frequently dropping out. When I mentioned this to front desk staff, they offered to reset the WiFi on my floor, however it made little difference.
The above matters (air conditioning and WiFi) are all things that are taken for granted these days and are expected of any reasonable hotel, so to experience the difficulties outlined indicates to me that the hotel management is not really serious about guest satisfaction or comfort.
Draw what conclusions you will from this review, but from my perspective, it’s is unlikely I would stay at this hotel again when I next return to Hakodate.

We had a pleasant stay at Hotel Raffinato Sapporo. The hotel is conveniently located and easily accessible by public transportation. The room was spacious, with a practical layout that made our stay comfortable. While the design is simple, everything was clean and well-maintained. A good choice for travelers looking for value and convenience.
Located near night eateries and good place for late goers . Walking distance to train and morning market within 15 minutes. Small rooms with little tv. Comfy rooms and nice amenities to be collected near reception.
Location: Unbeatable. An easy sub-10-minute walk to Sapporo JR Station, even with a 30” and a 20” suitcase.
Room Size & Design: Perfectly adequate and smartly designed. The inclusion of both a full-height mirror and a medium-sized wall mirror at the desk was brilliant for makeup.
Coffee Amenities: Above and beyond! The room had instant coffee, creamer, and sugar, plus a Nespresso machine. They generously provide 6 capsules per day (we enjoyed 12 capsules over our 2-night stay).
Verdict: A top choice for convenience, comfort, and a quality caffeine fix in Sapporo.

Fabuloso
JJesscacaAbout 10-15mins driving distance from the city center. Parking is located next to it (around 2mins walking distance) where u have to walk through an alley to hotel main door. Perhaps they can install a street light in the alley way or a back door near to parking lots coz it is quite dark and scary to walk alone.
Breakfast is lack of variety but acceptable.
Other than these, overall is satisfied.
UUsuario invitadoGreat hotel in a nice & quiet location in Sapporo. I enjoyed the hotel and its well-equipped 24 hour gym. Front desk staff were friendly to my kids and even assisted us in booking a bigger taxi to Sapporo Station as we had big luggage in tow.
The hotel is well-appointed and trendy in design. The complimentary beverages which were replenished daily was a nice touch!
Definitely recommended in Sapporo! We will be back!

Qquek sweekiangVery disappointed with the buffet standard as compared to my 2023 visit. The food selection is below average.
TV stations all in JAPANESS, there is not consideration for international guest.
Shampoo is near empty and no top up and look very uncalled for as a 5 star hotel.
No housekeeping for guest staying for 2 days.
Most of the staffs couldn't speak English and making communication very tough.
Bell boy welcoming us are very friendly
EeyanwongI had an amazing time at this Japanese onsen resort—it’s the real deal! The authentic onsen experience was a total highlight, with private baths that had top-notch water quality, making it so easy to unwind and just soak in the calm. The Japanese-style room was gorgeous, decked out with traditional decor that really set the vibe.
The food was incredible, with fresh, flavorful dishes. The staff were super friendly, always ready to help with a smile, which made the whole stay feel warm and welcoming. What blew us away was coming back from dinner to find our futon beds perfectly prepped. This place is absolutely a chill, authentic Japanese getaway!
GGunadyWe had issue with transport from chitose airport to hakodate as the train was canceled due to weather condition. The hotel approved our request to cancel 1 night and keep the other night reservation. We had a good stay at halodate global view hotel. Although the room is small, the cleanliness and amenities are top notch. The sauna and common bath is also good and spacious. Overall, we enjoy our stay.
YYi ShieanNestled by the serene Lake Akan, Tsuruga Akan Resort offers an immersive onsen experience wrapped in Ainu heritage and modern luxury. While the resort falls short on its buffet—a rather underwhelming spread given the price range comparable to other premium onsen resorts—it more than makes up for it with its impressive array of onsen baths, each designed to provide a unique and rejuvenating experience.
The resort is split between the Main Building and the newer Wing Building. The Main Building exudes a more traditional atmosphere, while the Wing Building presents a contemporary take on relaxation, but both are bound together by their dedication to Ainu motifs—from the intricately designed lift doors to the towels, celebrating the indigenous culture of Hokkaido.
The onsen baths are, without a doubt, the crown jewel of the resort. In the Main Building, the basement offers an extraordinary variety of baths, from the enchanting Cave Bath to the rustic Log Bath, carved from a thousand-year-old tree. The Bubble Bath delivers a gentle, soothing soak, but the Massage Bath steals the show. With water shooting from a high ceiling, targeting sore muscles in the shoulders and back, it’s a deeply therapeutic experience.
On the 8th floor, the sauna is housed in a stunning dome-shaped glass structure, offering unobstructed views of the sky while you steam. However, the real spectacle lies at the basement’s open-air bath, which directly overlooks Lake Akan. The sight of the lake at dawn, with the morning mist hovering above the water, is nothing short of breathtaking.
The Wing Building showcases a more modern onsen experience, headlined by its hot stone sauna. It blends traditional and contemporary design, featuring hot and cold stone rooms adorned with intricate Ainu-inspired motifs. It’s an ideal retreat for those seeking a fusion of modern wellness with cultural depth.
An added touch of luxury is the availability of centennial Akan spring water, served for drinking at the onsen baths. Renowned for its purity and health benefits, it’s a refreshing complement to the onsen experience, keeping guests hydrated while they indulge in the various baths.
While the buffet could use an upgrade to match the overall quality of the resort, the unmatched variety of onsen baths more than compensates. The meticulous attention to design, cultural elements, and breathtaking views make this resort a standout among onsen destinations.
AAgnes.s ChowStaff are polite and friendly. The hotel is clean, spacious and comfortable. The Onsen facilities are good (both in room and public). Dinner and breakfast served were good too. Will definitely come back and visit again.
